Wargame of the Year 2012 Runner-up: Battle Academy12 Dec 2012 0
I've lost track of the number of times we talked about Battle Academy on PT this year - and for good reason. Battle Academy's arrival on the App Store was revelatory.
This was the first notable PC game to jump to mobile with no compromises whatsoever. With an enormous wealth of content on offer, Battle Academy was a rebuke to anyone who claimed that the iPad was a no-fly zone for hardcore game developers - and with it's price stubbornly fixed at $20, it was also proof that people were willing to pay good money for apps that were worth it. Slitherine boss JD McNeil took a gamble and it paid off.
And Battle Academy was absolutely worth every nickel. It's a simple game as wargames go, focused on smaller engagements and presenting a streamlined take on armored combat and infantry tactics, but that simplicity makes it accessible and instantly comprehensible - something that feed into its rich multiplayer component.
For most of 2012, it was one of the very best games on all of iOS, and unassailably the best wargame. It's only now, in the waning days of the year that its supremacy is challenged - not too shabby for a game that made its original appearance on the PC back in 2010.
