Review: The Astonishing Game

Wed Feb 08, 2017 4:00 pm

Back in high school I was into the progressive-metal band Dream Theater (yes, I'm old). I really liked "Images and Words" and mostly liked "Awake" and even went to one...

Thanks for the review! Got the game but after verifying the lack of online multiplayer and online game manual, I deleted it from my tablet and got refunded.

Also, though a big DT fan, I just had to disable the music as I could not focus on the game, I guess my brain is going into single task mode when listening to their music.

For comparison, the similar Uhr Warlords made a better impression (and, yes in there, the music from Demonaz was left enabled). Although The Astonishing has a few technical improvements over Uhr (like, zoomable board and 2D view, at the cost of 450MB of storage compared to ~100MB in Uhr) there are indeed many other digital boardgames with better gameplay/digital implementation.

If they add async online multiplayer I might reconsider but, as it is now, it's a pass.
