Pocket Tactics Presents: A Guide to Mahjong

Thu Jul 06, 2017 2:29 pm

You might remember a game you played on your Macintosh back in the 1980s using tiles with a variety of Chinese characters and images - seasons, dragons, coins and bamboo...

Richard,

Thanks for the great overview of true mahjong apps. I played mahjong with my family growing up and became disheartened with this beloved classic became synonymous with its current popular solitaire iteration. I've since forgotten how to play, but after reading your article, I'm going to dive back in and relive a piece of my childhood.

Hear hear! I've long been a fan of what could be simply seen as "Asian 4 Player Gin Rummy", but love how, unlike Gin Rummy, it isn't simply who goes out first but going out first in style (doing clever things like having all straights, all sets, multiple sets of dragons, etc.) is what will net you the big points.

Sorry to double post, but 1 I've enjoyed with competent AI and using what I find the far more detailed/interesting scoring system of the Japanese Mahjong:

One more to add to the list:

Hong Kong Style Mahjong (13 tiles) by Paul Vella is an app that plays fairly well - especially when you kick up the level of the AI. I typically play 1 or 3 point minimum hands, with the highest AI level and medium speed,. I also like using the "Extra" tileset, which looks like the tiles were photographed.
Here's the App Store link: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/hong-kong-style-mahjong/id916388468?mt=8

There are still some minor bugs in the game. I find that there's an issue with resuming a game; it seems to put some other hand there, and the game eventually crashes. That said, when playing a game from scratch, the app seems pretty stable.

It's a free app, but there's some small fee if you'd like to remove the ads that appear after a hand is won.
