Gratuitous Space Battles sneaks onto the App Store

Your rebel friends.

Loveable one-man studio Positech has broken new ground today with their revolutionary stealth launch of Gratuitous Space Battles for iPad, an experiment in marketing whereby a game is launched without telling anyone.

Gratuitous Space Battles is a sci-fi fleet combat simulator that was originally released for PC and Mac in 2009 to general acclaim. It’s a natural fit for tablets, and I can’t wait to get my hands on it. The PC version has been steadily adding features (like a campaign mode) since its release – it will be interesting to see how many of those features have been translated over to the iPad edition. I’ll try to have a review up in the next few days.

With absolutely no pre-release hype that I could detect, Positech’s Cliffski simply announced the game’s arrival with a tweet:

As recently as last year, Cliffski didn’t “get” the iPad, making GSB’s appearance on the App Store all that more mysterious. The game has been ported to iOS by Mac re-write shop Red Marble Games.

Gratuitous Space Battles is available for $9.99 on the App Store and is iPad-only. Check out the trailer for PC version after the jump.
