Here’s a bit of a bombshell. The Logic Factory, the formerly enigmatic developers behind classic sci-fi 4X Ascendency, released an iBook earlier this month that made sideways references to future games – without getting into any specifics. Tonight, they’ve uploaded a short track to their website that is unambiguously called a “sample soundtrack for Ascendancy II”, and accompanied by a logo for the “Ascendancy II Multiverse” – whatever that is.
For a company that spent the last decade in quasi-monastic isolation, two hints about future releases in one month is downright gregarious. There’s been no official announcement of Ascendancy II yet, but the dots are pretty easy to connect here. Given Logic Factory’s unequivocal statements about developing exclusively for iOS for the time being, it looks like we can expect a sequel to one of the great sci-fi 4X games on iPads and iPhones sometime soon.
I reached out to the Logic Factory’s Todd Templeman, who told me that the music isn’t so much an announcement as “sharing work in progress”. Templeman also said that “our official announcements will be bigger and come with a release date.”
If you had told me in January that we’d be getting a new X-Com and a new Ascendancy this year, I would have checked you for head trauma. Give the Ascendancy II track a listen at The Logic Factory’s website (scroll down a bit when you get there).
