Slide to Play reports that Atari is resurrecting a number of older franchises with new mobile editions – chief among them being classic theme park simulator Roller Coaster Tycoon. There’s little detail in the report and StP doesn’t link to their source, but the post states that RCT will be returning Q1 of 2013 with Android and iOS editions.
At least a few years ago, it seemed like Atari had no idea what made the first couple of Roller Coaster Tycoon titles a success. After RCT 2 the series got further away from the ride design and park management gameplay, shifting the focus to letting you ride roller coasters in 3D. This is George Lucas/Star Wars prequels-level missing the point.
I don’t know about you, but I play games to do things I can’t actually do in real life. If I want to ride a roller coaster, Thorpe Park is like an hour away. Designing roller coasters, on the other hand, isn’t a job anyone who respects human life will give me anytime soon. Hopefully the mobile version of Roller Coaster Tycoon spends more time on the business sim side of the house.
The other revenant franchises mentioned in Slide to Play‘s post are Centipede and two more I’ve never heard of. The Centipede game is (I kid you not) Centipede: Origins, which implies we’ll soon all learn the gritty, Faustian backstory of the titular insect.
UPDATE: I did a little digging around in my own inbox and found StP’s source – an Atari press release from this afternoon. Also in that release is a mention of Dungeons & Dragons: Warbands, “a turn-based strategy game.. and the first official Dungeons and Dragons title ever to hit iOS devices.” Atari, you have my attention.
