Last week’s signs and portents of a new Playdek release were true – following hot on the heels of Fluxx, Playdek are unleashing Penny Arcade: Gamers vs Evil into the wild tonight. I’ve been messing around with a review copy and it is everything you’d expect from a Playdek game.
Adapted from an existing physical card game, Gamers vs Evil looks and controls a lot like Playdek’s deck-building masterpiece Ascension – but it’s unmistakably a different game. The rules are different enough from Ascension that I needed to retreat into the tutorial after rashly deciding to skip it. It’s also unmistakably a Penny-Arcade game: in the tutorial, I was obliged to purchase a card with a pair of testicles on it.
If you dig Penny-Arcade‘s comedy (I won’t lie, I laughed pretty hard at the Rocky Mountain oysters) or are just looking for a new online card game, then this is what you want. I’ve given the app the barest once-over but it gleams with that characteristic Playdek quality.
As usual, the futuristic utopia of New Zealand have already got the game – check the App Store round about midnight in your time zone and everyone else should as well.
