Playdek surfaced today with some very big news: the forthcoming release of manga-style card game Tanto Cuore is only the speartip of their inroads into the Japanese market. Playdek (our Publisher of the Year last year) are partnering with Yasumi Matsuno, the creator of Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story, to create not one new game, but a series of games.
The first new game to emerge from this partnership is going to be Unsung Story: Tale of the Guardians, designed by Matsuno and French designer Christophe Boelinger, the designer behind popular 2010 board game Earth Reborn. Playdek says that the game will be a head-to-head card game set in a medieval fantasy world. Sounds like just the thing to sop up our tears when Ascension goes offline next year.
Final Fantasy Tactics is one of the most widely-beloved strategy games of the last couple of decades — it’s also the subject of one of Square Enix’s best iOS ports. I’m looking forward to seeing what Matsuno and Playdek have got in store for us.
Besides the Unsung Story news, Playdek also announced that they’ve signed a deal with Konami to mobile editions of Far East of Eden, a game that has disappointingly little to do with John Steinbeck. The games are a classic RPG series in Japan, and Playdek’s versions will launch “late 2014″.
Playdek aren’t doing too badly this year: they’ve shipped Game of the Year contender Agricola and have linked up with one of the world’s biggest gaming brands for the forthcoming Dungeons & Dragons Lords of Waterdeep.
