Games Workshop’s official blog White Dwarf has announced the very first officially-licensed iOS game set in the world of Wahammer 40K – and it’s a remake of the classic Space Hulk.
If you didn’t obsessively play the computer game (or the original Games Workshop boardgame) in the 90s like I did, Space Hulk is a turn-based tactical game that places you in command of a squad of superhuman Space Marine Terminators tasked with neutralizing a Tyrannid infestation aboard a derelict spaceship. Imagine X-Com meets James Cameron’s Aliens and you’re most of the way there.
Full Control, the makers of Tactical Soldier and Frontline Tactics, is the studio joining the fraternity of developers appointed by Games Workshop to bring their iconic titles to iOS. That club already includes Nomad Games (who are working on Talisman) and Hunters creators Rodeo Games, who are bringing Warhammer Quest to iOS. Like Full Control’s last game, Space Hulk will be available for PC and Mac as well as iOS and will feature multiplayer across all of those platforms.
I wasn’t the biggest fan of Frontline Tactics, but Space Hulk’s excellent gameplay is a known quantity – combine that with Frontline’s excellent UI and presentation and I think this sounds like a winner.
The teaser trailer is embedded below – and man do I mean “teaser”. Try not to blink. Full Control’s website lists a release date of “2013” – we’ll talk to the devs as soon as we can and try to learn more.
