Is Borderlands Legends.. a strategy game?23 Oct 2012 0
Eagle-eyed members of the Gearbox forums broke the news of a mobile tie-in to popular PC & console shooter Borderlands earlier this week. A house ad in the Borderlands 2 strategy guide betrayed the existence of Borderlands Legends for iOS but few other details.
Given that the Borderlands games are shooters and that AAA console publishers have been generally blasé about the quality of iOS titles based on their properties, I assumed that Borderlands Legends was going to a shovelware first-person shooter for iPhone - a game genre that's never worked on the platform.
But the joke might be on me: TouchArcade's Brad Nicholson has spotted a feature on Borderlands Legends at (of all places) the Entertainment Weekly website.1 Judging from EW's screenshots and, um.. idiosyncratic writing2, Borderlands Legends looks like a squad tactical game with randomized missions and a more-than-passing resemblance to Firaxis' extraordinary new XCOM title. But is it turn-based? Does it share the console version's enormous procedurally-generated loot system? EW's not saying.
I don't think I've ever been excited for a mobile game from a major publisher before. And I'm not yet - there's still too much we don't know about Borderlands Legends - but I'm open to the possibility.
Lots more images over at.. Entertainment Weekly. I can't believe I just typed that.
1Who's doing the PR for Borderlands Legends - my dentist?
2Ugh: "While additional details on the action-RPG-strategy hybrid are scarcer than solid Eridium bricks, we did smuggle a few more tidbits from our brief look at Legends[.]"
