MechWarrior rides again 27 September

The granddaddy of all oversized fighting robot series, MechWarrior is coming out of retirement this year. It's been quite a hiatus for the franchise. There hasn't been a proper game set in the BattleTech universe since MechAssault 2 for the original Xbox in 2004 - that was before the iPhone existed and there were still fax machines in offices and Space Shuttles in space.

Besides the forthcoming free-to-play PC game (which appears to be essentially World of Tanks in space - not that there's anything wrong with that), MechWarrior is making its first foray onto iOS with MechWarrior: Tactical Command for the iPad, which they've just announced will be hitting the App Store on the 27th of this month.

Tactical Command is a real-time strategy game, but devs Personae Studios are promising a thoughtful experience that is true to the core BattleTech experience, with overheating weapons and destructible mech components. The game will also feature a lengthy campaign scripted by veteran sci-fi authors Randall Bills and Loren L. Coleman - and it will have to be lengthy indeed to counter the inevitable chorus of grousing over the price, which will be a relatively steep $9.99.

There's a trailer from last year but it's a teaser with no gameplay at all - I won't embed it but if you want to see (spoiler!) a robot blow up another robot while a guitar bashes out some power chords,
