News By Numbers - May 8th, 201708 May 2017 3
Welcome to this week's edition of News by Numbers, where we highlight some of the can't-miss mobile gaming news each and every week. Including this week!
Minecraft Pocket Edition: 1.0.8 update
Minecraft meets Magic: The Gathering and gamers rejoice. Well, maybe. If you want to replace Steve with Jace, Liliana, Chandra, Gideon, or any of the rest of the gang then this one's for you. The Magic: The Gathering skin pack is live, and you can check out more here.
Lost Portal: $2 expansion
A major expansion is coming to Lost Portal, an awesome single-player CCG and one of the best games of 2016. It unlocks Aerahym, a new town to explore and brings 33 new cards. The expansion will come as part of a larger update that adds 17 new avatar cards which will be available to all players. The Aerahym expansion will be available as a $2 IAP and will be out within the next few weeks.
Missile Cards: 5 bases to defend
Missile Cards is a super fun game that is part Missile Command and part Card Crawl. I really love the game on PC and the developer is cruising through the process to bring it to iOS as well. The gameplay is perfect for mobile and will no doubt be a gaming fixture on my phone for some time to come.
Faeria: 7 day Testflight
Faeria is doing a very limited test for mobile phones and Android tablets. If you have an iPhone running iOS 10 or newer, or a phone or tablet with Android 6 or newer you can join in. The test will run through May 15. Head over here for details.
Kickstarter: 57,515 new projects in 2016
Kickstarter released their 2016 benefit statement which, aside from being one of the best presented I've seen, is full of interesting metrics from the crowd-sourcing platform. Here's the key comment:
"In 2016, independent creators launched 57,515 new projects on Kickstarter. 80% were started by first-time creators. 20% were coming back to launch their second, third, or even 75th project. In all, 19,235 found the support they needed to get off the ground."
We get a lot of our games—mobile and otherwise—thanks to Kickstarter campaigns so it is interesting to get a look into the overall success of the company.
Reigns: 1,500,000 copies sold
Nerial tweeted out some interesting sales metrics last week. The game has sold a million-and-a-half copies, half on iOS, undoubtedly helped by the Apple spotlight. Android edged out Steam for the second-largest platform. It's unsurprising to me that mobile devices accounted for 80% of Reigns' sales, the swiping is key!
We sold 1.5 million copies of Reigns. 50% on IOS, 30% on android, 20% on steam (released the same day with the same price on all platforms).— Nerial (@nerial) May 2, 2017
Hearthstone: 70 million players
Blizzard recently announced a pretty big milestone for Hearthstone: 70 million players have played the game. What's more, Journey to Un'Goro drew more players to the game on a single day than ever before. To celebrate, Blizzard is giving anybody who logs in during the month of May a free pack.
