News by Numbers: July 3rd, 201703 Jul 2017 7
Welcome to this week's edition of News by Numbers, where we highlight some of the can't-miss mobile gaming news each and every week. Unless otherwise stated, hyperlinked game names direct to the Apple App Store.
Demon's Rise: $.99
Wave Light Game's awesome tactical RPG Demon's Rise is on sale right now for $1. The developer has been great about going back and adding all of the bells and whistles from the second game of the series to his first effort, so it keeps getting better and better. If you enjoy squad-based combat games you really need to act now to add this to your collection because the game's never going to get any cheaper than this! Also, the sale ends today…
The Elder Scrolls Legends: 1 free legendary card
Heroes of Skyrim, the first expansion for The Elder Scrolls: Legends, is now live. Its 154 new cards highlight many of the characters, places, and dragons of the popular Bethesda RPG. The game is also making its way to Android and you can pre-register now. If you do, you'll be gifted one legendary card once the game launches. The Elder Scrolls: Legends is a compelling alternative to Hearthstone and I highly recommend you check it out on Android. Might as well get that free legendary too.
Voyageur: version 1.2
One of the most unique and interesting games I've played this year, Voyageur is largely a text-based adventure game set in a sci-fi world. It's a little bit interactive fiction and a little bit Star Trader and just had an update with some nice changes:
- Added a bonus event; meet an old voyageur and listen to their tale of woe
- Added planetary quirks: ring systems, large moons, and planets orbiting gas giants
- Added metallic planets
- More planet description content
- Significant adjustments to the planet description generator to improve descriptions and make them more varied.
Give it a shot if you're looking to try something a little different.
FTL: Faster than Light—an epic spacecraft simulation roguelike where you manage your crew, upgrade your ship, and work your way through myriad events and decisions—is on sale for $3. The game is normally $10 so this is quite a discount and a good time to buy in if you've not had the pleasure.
Age of Rivals: 9 days after launch
Card drafting, civilization building, collectible-card gaming, victory point claiming… Age of Rivals seems to have it all. That didn't stop the developers from getting an update out nine days later to add some nice quality of life items. The biggest update change is that you can now play a single-player game offline. This is nice for those who fly the once friendly skies and want to get their game on.
Epic Card Game: $20 for Digital Alpha Access
White Wizard Games, makers of Star Realms, had a wildly successful Kickstarter to bring Epic Card Game to digital life. Now, they are offering alpha access to the game on Steam and Android for $20, which also gets you the game at launch on all platforms (including iOS). Epic is another card game where you get all the cards you need to build decks and compete in combat with other players for one price with no boosters to buy or ultra-rare cards to chase.
Hades' Star: 24th of July
Hades' Star, a science-fiction mobile MMO with a great deal of promise, has been cruising through beta testing—a limited release in Canada and Australia—and is targeting a global launch on July 24. Beta has kept the crew busy, with tons of changes to help balance and improve the game. There will be one last big update right before launch that will bring a slew of new ship-based modules, new Cerberus ships, and some economy tweaks.
Strike Team: 30th of July
Speaking of Demon's Rise, developer Wave Light Games has a brand new game in the works, and it's on a collision course with your iPad! Strike Team is a turn-based tactical RPG, much like the Demon's Rise series, but with a sci-fi flavor inspired by XCOM. You'll build your own crew of space marines from twelve different options class options, though knowing Wave Light Games the options will only grow with time. Your team is aboard a ship that has responded to a distress call. A disabled battleship is the lone survivor of a fight with an alien fleet and needs help fast. Strike Team will also be tactics heavy and make use of the morale system and terrain effects. The focus will be on action points for movement, attacks, and other abilities. Strike Team is on track for a July 30th launch, but here's some alpha footage to hold you over.
Longsword Tabletop Tactics: $20,000 Kickstarter goal
Want to go to war with an army of miniatures without all the painting and measuring? Longsword Tabletop Tactics is the latest digital effort to allow you to do just that. Here's their Kickstarter blurb: "Longsword is a game of digital tabletop miniatures. Build an army, paint your units, customize your tabletop, and fight online!" Sounds and looks pretty cool, but they need some funding to get it done. Check out their Kickstarter page for more info, and you can also check out Strategy Gamer's interview with creator Daniel DiCicco.
Mobile Games: $64.9 billion in 2020
Last week I mentioned the projected increase in global mobile gaming revenues from $40.6 billion in 2015 to $46.1 billion this year. Now according to the combined data and analysis from two companies, Applift and Newzoo, that total will step up to nearly $65 billion by 2020. If you like infographics, and why wouldn't you, check out this one highlighting their findings. (Hat tip to Pocketgamer.biz for the scoop.)
