By Nick Vigdahl 14 Nov 2016 1

Welcome to the latest edition of News by Numbers, where we highlight some of the can't-miss mobile gaming news of the week. Although really, you guys should be playing Rome: Total War instead...

Perchang: $0

Perchang, a Rube-Goldberg-machine style game with sixty fast-twitch testing levels, is currently free.

The Perchang Black expansion adds 24 more levels for $1.99. Kelsey gave this one three stars back in June, and if you were interested but holding off now is the time. Grab both on iOS or Android.

Pathfinder Adventures: Update 1.1.5

Content alert: Obsidian just dropped Deck 5, Sins of the Saviors, for the Pathfinder Adventures game. According to the patch notes, there's quite a bit included: 5 new scenarios, 3 new locations, new maps, loot and rewards, and more. Check it out on iOS or Android.

Eisenhorn Xenos: 3.01 GB

Eisenhorn: Xenos, the third person adventure game set in the Warhammer world and based on the book of the same name is available on Android starting today. It is a console game that was ported to iOS and now Android. It is a big install on iOS and I'm sure it will be on Android as well, so keep an eye on capacity if you pick this up.

We owe this one a review, so stayed tuned!

TreasureHunter: $5

TreasureHunter, a deck-drafting game by Richard Garfield, just arrived on mobile late last week. In it you can compete against seven different AI opponents, each with a different skill level, or play online using an auto-matching feature. I've not yet played TreasureHunter in any form, but Richard Garfield created Magic: The Gathering, so I'm gonna go ahead and say it's worth checking out. You can get it on iOS and Android.

Mysterium: 7 players

Yet another board game is coming to the mobile market in 2016. Mysterium is a murder-mystery game that takes place in the form of a psychic séance. As a player you lend a hand in the investigation, gather information, and come to your conclusions about what happened. The game will have a solo story mode and cooperative multiplayer for up to seven players. Mysterium will be $7 for iOS or Android and available in December.

Little Briar Rose: 8 mini games

Little Briar Rose is an upcoming adventure game inspired by Sleeping Beauty with beautiful stained-glass style visuals. The game will be set in a fairy-tale world full of things to explore and fantastic creatures with which to interact. There will be eight puzzle-style mini games to play. Little Briar Rose drops this week to iOS and Android.

Final Fantasy: XV

A Final Fantasy mobile MMO spin off based on the world of Final Fantasy XV is in the works. This one is a combined effort between Square Enix and Machine Zone (Game of War; Fire Age) [Oh dear -ED]. The idea is for millions of people to interact in a single instance filled with the characters and story of the Final Fantasy world. Given the companies involved it's hard to envision this as anything but a free-to-play offering, but here's to hoping.

Dresden Files Cooperative Card Game: 16 books

Did you know there was a card game based on the popular Dresden Files novels by Jim Butcher? There is. You can play as Harry, Murph, Susan, Michael and the Alphas in a cooperative card game based on the first five novels of the sixteen-book series. There are also randomly generated side jobs based on the short stories of the series. The Dresden Files destroyed its Kickstarter goal for the physical game and is now in development for digital. Hidden Achievement, the studio doing the adaptation, is planning several modes of play including single player, pass-and-play multiplayer, LAN multiplayer, and online multiplayer. They are targeting spring or summer of 2017 and a release for iOS and Android devices and three expansions are in the works to bring characters and decks from the next six books. Hidden Achievement confirmed they are going with a premium pricing model which makes this super exciting for Dresden fans and card-game enthusiasts alike.

Demon's Rise 2: 40 hours of gameplay

Demon's Rise 2 was released on November 10th and is a turn-based tactical RPG. It is set in a dark fantasy world where you play as demon-worshipping barbarians. There are ten character classes available now with another five to be released in a future update. The game has over sixty levels and according to the developer provides 30 to 40 hours of play. Demon's Rise 2 is a premium title and will be on sale through Saturday for $5. You can get it on iOS, although watch out for our review tomorrow!

Demons Rise 2

78% of US gamers

There are some interesting statistics coming out of a recent PayPal survey on ebooks and gaming:

  • 78% of US game consumers play games on their smartphones
  • Mobile games are particularly popular among males (77%) and Millenials (77%)
  • 83% of Americans surveyed said they played mobile games in their bedrooms in the last three months

All of this points to the continued rise of mobile gaming in the US.

Minecraft Pocket Edition: 256 blocks

Mojang just announced version 1.0 of Minecraft: Pocket Edition. The update will usher forth the End, as in end game of Minecraft, including the Ender Dragon. The ultimate goal, if you really need it, is to defeat said dragon and thus beat the game. In addition, Mojang is increasing the world height to 256 blocks. So if you want to build higher than ever before, you'll soon be able to. [Android]
