Reader’s Choice Game of the Year 2017: Through the Ages05 Jan 2018 2
The people have spoken. Not only have our readers felt that Through the Ages was a great Card Game and Mutliplayer game, overall they’ve felt it was THE best mobile release of 2017.
Matt’s already said a few words on TtA in response to it winning the other awards, but this is what we said when he found out it had also won Game of the Year:
Okay, well, after saying no single accolade could do justice to Through the Ages, maybe this one can. It's hard to think of a more worthy recipient for the ultimate gong in 2017. What continues to stun me about the game isn't just it's brilliance: it got adapted from brilliant source material, after all. It's how many places there are it could have gone wrong, and didn't. This is a complex game with tons of bits and vast strategic nuance: an almost impossible ask to shoehorn into a mobile. Yet CGE digital did it, and did it proud, and earned the honour of this award.
And just to re-iterate the point, this is a choice excerpt from Matt’s review:
In every other respect it's an outstanding adaptation of an outstanding game. The pace of board game releases, both digital and physical, in recent years has left me feeling rather jaded. Through the Ages helped rejuvenate me with the pure, fierce joy of play that only very best titles can deliver.
And, just to top it off, here are some of the reasons why you felt it was such a good game:
“Wonderful interface, incredible AI, perfect conversion of an amazing board game.”
“I think it's the most ambitious board game port of the year. It takes a huge complex game and makes it playable on a phone. That's an very laudable achievement.”
“Because it is perfect? Good enough?”
Very well done to CGE Digital – they are a shining of example of how to get your board game port right, and we hope to see more following in their footsteps in 2018.
There isn’t an official runner-up in this category this year, mainly because the rest of the votes were spread out quite evenly amongst different games. Let’s run through some of the other titles you honoured in 2017:
Halcyon 6: Starbase Commander, which one person described as “A deep and engaging game that has been perfectly ported from the PC”.
Fire Emblem: Heroes, which we did review here. One voter said “While it has F2P baggage, the controls are so smooth and natural that this is the "quick fix" tactical game I have played most this year. Unlike most F2P games it's not trying to pick my pocket, either.”
Cat Quest makes another appearance having come second in the RPG category. One voter described it as being a “Console quality game on a iPad”.
Race for the Galaxy also got more recognition, with one reader stating “It is the most fun, multiplayer game this year.”
Congratulations on CGE Digital on their ultimate victory for 2017. That’s the end of our GOTY Awards season for the past year. The bar has been set high for 2018, and we can’t wait to see what kind of games are going to get released.
