With all the love Nintendo is showing to Metroid, Mario, and Zelda when it comes to glossy new ports, you'd think that Chrono Trigger would be in the same conversation. Sadly, the globally loved RPG series isn't so lucky, missing out on fresh remakes or, at the very least, a decent Nintendo Switch 2 port. Well, Yuji Horii knows you all want something new from the series. So much so that he seems reluctant to talk about it.
It hasn't been too bad over the last few years, in my opinion. We have Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition for the Nintendo Switch to dive into. Chrono Trigger is sitting comfortably on your Steam Deck thanks to a PC version in 2018. But aside from those, it's a strangely quiet series, despite its abundance of loyal fans and reverence in the halls of gaming history. In Horii's appearance on the 'KosoKoso Hōsō Kyoku' livestream, the host presses him about whether Square Enix's recent attention on the series is leading to something bigger.
Horii says, "I can't talk about that", as they laugh and try to avoid the subject. While there are plans for a concert celebrating Square Enix titles, he adds on the prospect of any forthcoming announcements, "if I say that, you'll figure it out." They also add that they'll "get in trouble" if they discuss it any further. It's not an outright no, is it? But does that mean a Chrono Trigger Switch port could be on the cards?
We'd love that to be the case. After all, what platform doesn't benefit from having one of the best RPGs on it? Square Enix seems to have more plans for the series, if you believe this post. If you missed it, the studio made a big deal about the franchise in March, declaring on social media that "at this milestone of the 30th anniversary, with gratitude to everyone who has played Chrono Trigger so far, we plan to expand various projects jumping out of the game world over the next year."
The year isn't over yet. There's still time for one more announcement to cap off 2025 in a major way. But forget us for a minute, what do you think will happen? Sound off in the Pocket Tactics Discord and let us know your thoughts. You can read our Chrono Cross remaster review, too.
