Duet Night Abyss hasn't even made it to two months old yet, and we're already getting a massive update. That's right - following its global launch on October 28, the unique, free-to-play action RPG has continued to evolve, and it's now expanding with a huge update that introduces a new area, fresh quests, and a heap of exciting characters for you to meet, collect, and build.

The new Duet Night Abyss update, entitled Huaxu: The Wind Awakening, launched on December 23. The release of this update also coincides with the game's upcoming Steam launch, which will further expand the game's availability beyond the existing PC launcher, Epic Games Store, iOS, and Android versions, meaning you can play for free on even more platforms soon.

This new version sees a continuation of the main story as we journey to the brand-new nation of Huaxu alongside Zhiliu, a beautiful merchant you may recognize from the Stranger from Afar event, and the demon king herself, Snow. Boasting a distinctly Eastern fantasy style, Huaxu is a breathtaking land that's much larger than Icelake, meaning there are plenty of new locations for you to explore and secrets for you to uncover.

We start our adventure through Huaxu in Mistwharf, which is situated in the southern part of the nation. This area is home to a variety of stunning locations, from the EverSpring trading guild nestled beneath a colossal, flourishing tree to the dazzling yet dangerous Gritblight Expanse, which is now overrun with filthoids and Sable Bi'an.

If you're a returning player, you may notice that these locations look even more beautiful than the scenes you remember from Icelake, and you're not imagining things. During the Duet Night Abyss Huaxu Version Preview livestream, Environment Artist Lichee explains that the dev team has "re-built the underlying artistic display logic and made adjustments to the rendering style", aiming to "enrich players' enjoyment with more diverse terrain environments and spectacular scenes." The result sees the world shift to a more realistic approach with refined textures and lighting, and it truly is a sight to behold.

However, it's not just the visuals that are different here. The Charons are seen very differently in Huaxu, too. Unlike in the Hyperborean Empire, where they're referred to as "demon's children" and treated as lesser beings, the people of Huaxu refer to the Charons as Loongscion, and see their horns as a symbol of good fortune. So you can expect our Phoxhunter and their motley crew of companions to experience a very different reception here, and it looks like we won't be grovelling to guards again any time soon.

On your journey, you also learn that Huaxu is governed by a set of laws known as The Nine Chapters of Dafeng, and all criminal acts are automatically punished by the laws with no need for intervention, leading to a seemingly peaceful land. But, of course, things are never quite that simple, and life isn't exactly idyllic in Huaxu. Beneath the surface of this seemingly peaceful nation, there's a major crisis bubbling, as the Scourge of Zhuyin plagues the land, and you soon find yourself at the heart of it.

Beyond the main story quests, this fresh update also introduces seven new side quests that offer a comprehensive glimpse into Huaxu's worldview, inviting you to explore its unique culture and customs. Of course, you'll also get some rewards and EXP along the way - after all, no Phoxhunter worth their salt works for free.

Following the popularity of the co-op area in Icelake's town square, where players have been gathering to perform the Goofy Groove emote in droves, the dev team has decided to expand the "co-op area" to cover the entirety of Mistwharf. So, not only do you have plenty of other places to bust a move, but you can also explore the new nation with your friends, adventuring side-by-side.

There are even a bunch of free co-op postures for you to collect from the Impression Shop, as well as a new day-nights system that allows you to switch up the time and adventure in your preferred lighting, so you can kick off a real dance battle or snap some cute photos whenever and however you like.

Oh, and don't worry if you or your pals are new to the game and want to get right into the co-op fun, as the game now has a skip story feature, so you can zoom through Icelake and get to Huaxu in a flash - though we highly recommend sticking around for the story, it's a genuinely fascinating world and the first few chapters really help you get to grips with the lore and the characters you're traveling with!

Beyond teaming up with other players, there are also a total of six new characters to add to your roster in the whole Huaxu version, all of which you can obtain for free. First up is Fushu, the current heir of the Fu lineage and the Hall of Ephemerality. A healer with a classical demeanor, Fushu's design holds a striking Eastern aesthetic, including a traditional Chinese qipao, folding fan, and decorative, beaded hair pins.

She's not just a pretty face, either. Fushu not only deals hydro damage, but is also capable of restoring HP and sanity, as well as generating a shield for her teammates. Of course, sanity is one of the most vital resources in DNA's combat, making her an incredibly valuable ally. As such, you should be glad to know that she's available right now, and you can get her for free through the Immersive Theatre.

Following Fushu, the chivalrous swordsman Kezhou will arrive in-game on January 20, 2026, as the next Immersive Theatre reward. This strapping gentleman is highly proficient in all weapons, and he really demonstrates that in his kit, dishing out solid AoE damage, boosting his own ranged attack speed, and, during his ultimate, cycling through a variety of different melee weapons as he fights.

Alongside these two, you'll also be able to pick up Zhiliu, the proprietress of EverSpring, Yuming, the Magistrate of Tingtian, Su Yi, a girl skilled in mechanical arts, and our old friend Camilla, who's in charge of The Asphodel in Icelake. You'll also be able to pick up powerful weapons for each of the new characters during the update, so keep your eyes peeled.

It's a good thing there are so many powerful characters on the way, too, as The Phoxhunter Summit has a new ranking system featuring two new phases - [Group Stage] (Preliminaries) and [Apex Rankings] (Finals). Here, you can challenge dungeons of varying difficulty and earn points based on your performance. Then, after completing the Apex Rankings stage, you can exchange any Phoxcoins you earn to purchase Recasting Moulds, which you can use to raise your weapons' smelting levels, or Amplification Stimulators, which increase the level of demon wedge enhancements.

For all you fashionistas out there, the new Duet Night Abyss update has got you covered, too. The new limited-time banner, Ocean's Distant Rhythm, is open now, giving you the chance to obtain Fushu's exclusive outfits, weapon skins, teleportation effects, and other accessories. There are also a bunch of other free cosmetics that arrived alongside the update.

On top of that, if you log in any time during this version, you can claim a Serenity Character Skin Selection - Dark Jade chest, which allows you to pick a stunning, qipao-themed skin for a character of your choice. The Verdant Serenity qipao-themed skin will also be available in the in-game store with a limited-time discount, so you can deck out all of your favorites in Huaxu's finest threads.

If that's not enough freebies for you, you can also claim a total of 20 free Prismatic Hourglasses across two login events throughout the version's duration. And, in addition to the protagonist's Christmas Skin discount, opening the selectable skin gift chest will trigger another limited-time discount, with your first purchase available at 40% off. Plus, with the new Interwoven Thoughts Gift Chest, you can obtain characters at a discounted rate, offering greater flexibility if you don't want to grind it out.

Finally, aspiring Phoxhunters around the world will be glad to know that the French version of the game has entered its final testing phase, and is due to release sometime in early 2026. German and Spanish versions are also currently in preparation, so stay tuned for future updates.

Duet Night Abyss and the Huaxu: The Wind Awakening update is out now on PC via the dedicated launcher, and the Epic Games Store, as well as mobile via iOS and Android, and you can play for free today.
