Splendor, Multiplayer Culture in Digital & Physical Boardgames

Sat Oct 22, 2016 3:00 pm

Tabletop adaptation Splendor earned itself four stars here when it released in 2015. That's a big score for a game without an online play option.

Splendor is not asynchronous, which is ridiculous, in my opinion.

I am firmly in the camp that will no longer buy a game unless it has asynchronous multiplayer or goes on sale for .99. Whether I'm playing against my wife on the same couch while binge-watching TV or against my best friends who have scattered around the country and are in every stage of life imaginable, I need the ability to take a turn then go about my business. With my friends in particular I will never be able to coordinate a live 30 minute session of anything.

Totally agree with you! What other asynchronous titles to you know/are playing? I only know Star Realms....

I read this and thought 'asynchronous.... I don't remember that!' Before I went to go revisit to see if I had gone mad, you have confirmed my experience. Not async... never going to use it - shame!

There are tons of them out there, and many of them really good.

Anything by Playdek (Twilight Struggle, Ascension, Penny Arcade, Lords of Waterdeep, Agricola, Summoner Wars, and probably some I'm forgetting).

Here are some others from other developers:

Agricola: All Creatures Big & Small
Patchwork
Le Havre: Inland Port
Brass
Cthhulu Realms
Ticket to Ride (have to be buddies with the people you invite, though, or it's almost impossible to set up async)
Lost Cities
Titan

And a bunch of others...
