The Best Roguelikes on iOS and Android

Mon Jun 04, 2018 3:03 pm

Roguelikes are a tricky genre to pin down, seeing as the name itself began popping up everywhere at once without much structural rigor once a certain type of game started...

Excellent compilation. I could add many more (Space Grunts as a Starter for 10), but I understand these articles are moving beasts, which is a good thing!

Edit: On reflection, perhaps Space Grunts would be better suited to the 'Turn Based' category, but don't ask me. I struggle with game categorisation at the best of times. ;)

I prefer the classical definition of roguelike, though I prefer them to be more simple and less hardcore (ie. not so nethack) and with that in mind, I would say mobile games like Quest of Dungeons, Cardinal Quest, Pixel Dungeon, Sword of Fargoal, 100 Rogues, etc... I enjoy playing.

Outside of that classical scope, I enjoyed Weird Worlds and Out There.

Dang saw FTL and got excited cause it said ios and Android! alas, it was really a mostly ios list.

Pixel Dungeon was a good one though as someone mentioned.

Also wish 868 Hack would come to droid.

I know it's a card game, but Solitairica really belongs on this list.

I hear you, but it's on the card game list as we think of it as a card game first.

There's so many good mobile games out there, I don't see any point in having games duplicated across various lists. It robs other equally deserving games of the chance to be celebrated.

Out There is one of the best, imo.

It is funny that Auro is criticized for being Android only and is then followed by a long list of iOS exclusives :).

I had missed crowntakers, off to check it out.

I would love to see a genuinely solid Nethack port to iPad. Not a "like Nethack" but the actual game backed by the wiki, with sane tablet-focused controls. There are a couple quickie basic ports but I haven't really seen Nethack (or Angband) in all its glory.

Of course I'm posting this in the hope that someone will say "doffus, check out _____" :-)

Auro USED to be an iOS game as well and I hope it will eventually come back to the system. Must have been one of the iOS 11 purge.
