Great article. Quick comment on the ubiquitous greying of the hobby trope I think you hit the nail on the head with the introduction of rules that allow easy transition to historical miniatures.


From my observations at recent HMGS conventions I have seen lots of new and younger faces mingled in with the greying ones. I think Bolt Action is a good example here bringing folks over from 40k. I see new Zombie rules and Pirate rules, Blood & Plunder bringing in new faces, at least ones with some shekels to spend!

Enjoyed the read. Have to say designing and customizing units by hand to suits one's taste is alluring. Wouldn't know where to start, even though there has been some very good articles here on how to get started. For instance, how complex are the rules and how does one recreate the flow of battle with static displays and pieces?
