Further Reading - The Age of Sail

Wed Oct 16, 2019 12:06 pm

For the past few weeks we’ve been 'talking like a pirate' by reviewing various wargames covering the age of fighting sail.

Bill:

Nice list - especially "The Admiral" !

When I started sailing on a square rigged ship the captain recommended Harland's book to the crew. It is an excellent reference. Just to add several suggestions for US history:

Ian Toll's "Six Frigates" is an excellent book about the building of the US 44 gun "super frigates". For a more strategic out look I would recommend George Daughan's books. "Revolution on the Hudson" may not be about the sea but the important effect of a large waterway nevertheless.

De Ruyter,

No really, you like the Admiral??? Shocked, shocked I say, who might have possibly guessed. Dear say, might I ask why :) ?

Seriously, I've seen naval flicks before like Master and Commander, but the large scale battle scenes from overhead were jaw dropping.

Colonel Bill
