Summer has sure been a scorcher this year. I don't know about you, but while blue skies, beach trips, and bikinis are great, I personally can't wait for the sweet embrace of fall. Not only does it mark the transition to cooler weather, baggy sweaters, and pumpkin spice everything, it also ushers in what's arguably the best time of year - cozy games season.
While cozy games are great all year round, there's no doubt that they're most at home in the autumnal months. As the days grow shorter, nights grow longer, and temperatures start to drop, there's nothing better than coming home from work or school and curling up with an adorable adventure or serene social sim that helps you forget your troubles for a couple of hours.
We've already seen plenty of fantastic cozy games arrive this year, from indies to triple-A masterpieces that offer low-stress gameplay, relaxing vibes, and plenty of opportunities to express your creativity in unique and inventive ways. And, of course, with cozy games generally boasting a high level of playability, there are also heaps of classics and hidden gems from years gone by to explore. As such, there's plenty of fuel for the metaphorical cobblestone fireplace this year.
There's no doubt that the biggest cozy hit of 2026 has been Pokémon Pokopia on the Nintendo Switch 2, a social simulation sandbox game where you play as a Ditto restoring a derelict world for its Pokémon pals. This little masterpiece took the world by storm back in March, taking everyone's favorite elements from the likes of Animal Crossing, Stardew Valley, and Minecraft, and combining them with the wonderful world of Pokémon.
Then, just when most of us thought we'd seen everything there was to see in Ditto's world, Pokopia's Bubbly Basin DLC came along at the beginning of August and took everything to a whole new level (below water level, to be exact). Bubbly Basin is the first of three waves of DLC under the Pokopia Expansion Pass, introducing a brand-new underwater town for you to restore, 50 new Pokémon, and, of course, a bunch of new furniture, items, and building blocks, including pretty, pearl-studded pastels and dazzling deep-sea decor.
The DLC also arrives alongside the 2.0 update, which introduces countless new features and quality-of-life optimizations, including universal storage, working trash cans, upgrades for several of Ditto's moves, mass relic approval, and, of course, the new Dive move that allows Ditto to breathe underwater. Since the DLC and the 2.0 update launched, I've already spent way too many hours testing out my new sea legs, and I can't recommend it (and the base game) enough.
Now, if you're a fan of Pokopia on the hunt for more adventures, or you don't have a Nintendo Switch 2 and feel like you're missing out on the hype, I recommend looking into the Dragon Quest Builders series, especially Dragon Quest Builders 2.
Developed by Omega Force (who also developed Pokopia), Dragon Quest Builders 2 is an action RPG sandbox set in the iconic Dragon Quest universe. But don't worry if you haven't played a Dragon Quest game before - this works perfectly well as a standalone entry.
Backed by a whimsical fantasy storyline, you step into the shoes of a 'builder' washed up on a barren island. Teaming up with a variety of colorful and quirky characters, you set out to put your building skills to the test, restoring a variety of structures across different locations to help your new friends. Sound familiar?
Like Pokopia, Dragon Quest Builders 2 features block-based building mechanics, social simulation elements, farming, material gathering, and crafting. However, it also adds in some simple hack-and-slash combat. While combat isn't common in a cozy game, Dragon Quest Builders 2 handles it well, striking a brilliant balance between relaxing and engaging that offers near-limitless playability. I've put hundreds of hours into it over the past few years, and I still find something new to do every time I return.
Though it's not quite as well-known as Pokopia, another exciting cozy game to arrive on the scene this year is Moonlight Peaks. This highly-anticipated indie life sim first appeared on our radar back in 2023, immediately enchanting us with its unique art style and premise. After what felt like an eternity, it finally arrived on Steam and Nintendo Switch on July 7, 2026, and currently sits at 'very positive' on Steam.
Combining the familiar mechanics of games like Stardew Valley with a striking, gothic twist, Moonlight Peaks sees you take the role of a cute little vampire who moves into their family's abandoned homestead with plans to make it their own.
Living alongside other supernatural creatures such as werewolves, witches, and mermaids, you spend your time tending to mystical crops, learning spell-casting and potion-making, and befriending (or romancing) the locals. You also share your abode with a cat-shaped cryptid that has a very sharp tongue, which is a real highlight if you ask me.
While quite different, Moonlight Peaks naturally reminds me of another supernatural simulation game called Wylde Flowers. It also features all the classic cozy farming sim features - a rundown farm to fix up, crops to tend to and sell for profit, crafting recipes to learn, plenty of intriguing individuals to befriend, and a nice range of romance candidates - but this time you play as a witch.
With a heartwarming story, an intriguing mystery, simple yet engaging mechanics, and a dreamy, cozy artstyle, Wylde Flowers is an all-round great time, and the wonderful free content updates that dropped after launch only enhance it further.
Deviating from the world of spells and spooks, another cute cozy game that I always recommend is Little Kitty, Big City. This wholesome sandbox game follows the tale of a cute little kitty with a big personality. Lost in a bustling city, you must find your way home, befriending local stray animals and causing chaos along the way. And really, what's cozier than a cat collecting shiny bottle caps and guiding baby ducklings back to their dad?
I reviewed this one when it first released in May 2024, describing it as a "purr-fectly charming game with oodles of personality" and giving it a big old 9/10. Since then, it's received several free updates, including an adorable kitty customizer where you can make your dream cat. Double Dagger Studio also recently announced that it's arriving on mobile soon, and this new port is set to introduce some intriguing augmented reality features that allow you to invite your fuzzy feline friend into the real world. I can't wait to grab some shots of my virtual cat next to my real cat, even if he doesn't have a clue what's going on.
