Pocket Tactics Presents: Black Friday 2018

By Nick Vigdahl 23 Nov 2018 6

We see some of the biggest sales this time of year, and now that it's Black Friday/Thanksgiving for realises, there's crazy mobile deals popping up all over the place. Both the Google Play store and publishers on iOS have started discounting their games, although it's not completely universal - plenty of exclusive discounts on both sides of the fence.

Whether you're looking for something new or looking to finally pick up that game you were meaning to check out, there's something for everyone.

Best Board Game App Sales

Galaxy Trucker (Review) (iPad and Android): $2.99

The quest to become the galaxy's greatest space trucker jumped from tabletop to digital with this great adaptation. Two bucks off.

Asmodee Digital Games

As usual, Asmodee Digital is getting in on the sale action with a host of digital board and card games on sale:

Eight Minute Empire (Review) (iOS Universal and Android): $2.99

Speedy exploration and civilization building game Eight Minute Empire is on sale and worth a look if you enjoy victory-point style board gaming on your mobile device.

Istanbul Digital Edition (Review) (iOS Universal and Android): $4.99

Tabletop classic Istanbul got the digital treatment last summer and is now on sale for the first time, $2 off.

Bottom of the 9th (Review) (iOS Universal and Android): $1.99

Another Handelabra title, the entertaining Bottom of the 9th, is also on sale. This one covers the pivotal half inning of a close baseball game.

One Deck Dungeon (Review) (iPad and Android): $6.99

One of my favorite games of the year, One Deck Dungeon, is $3 off in honor of turkey and pie. This is the lowest price yet and I highly recommend it if you enjoy tactical board gaming.

Best Strategy App Sales

Final Fantasy Tactics (iPad): $4.99
Final Fantasy Tactics The War of the Lions (iOS Universal and Android) $3.99

Two Square Enix RPGs are now on sale. Both Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions are steeply discounted. They are decent ports and this is the cheapest they get.

Chaos Reborn: Adventures (Review) (iOS Universal and Android): $4.99

Turn-based tactical spellslinger Chaos Reborn: Adventures is challenging and fun and worth every one of the five stars in Matt's review. It's also on sale for the first time at 50% off. Get it.

XCOM Enemy Within (Review) (iOS Universal and Android) $1.99

XCOM is synonymous with turn-based tactics and XCOM Enemy Within is one of the first big-name tactical games on mobile. It's also only $2 on iOS and Android, its lowest price ever. Go get some.

Teen Titans GO! Figure (Review) (iOS Universal  and Android): $.99 on Android

Real time figure collect-and-battle game Teen Titans GO! Figure is the follow up to one of the most successful premium games on mobile. It came out earlier this year and is having its for sale, just a buck on Android. No sign of an iOS sale so far.

Iron Marines (Review) (iOS Universal and Android): $2.99 on iOS

Real-time-strategy gem Iron Marines is well worth grabbing if you're looking for some Starcraft-like action and tactics on mobile. This is the lowest price we see on the game, though the sale comes around every few months.

Vandals (iOS Universal and Android): $2.99

Vandals is a turn-based stealth game in the same vein as Hitman GO, but rather than taking down targets you are vandalizing buildings. It came out back in April and this is the lowest price we've seen.

Nanuleu (iOS Universal and Android): $1.99 on iOS

Nanuleu is an entertaining RTS/tower-defense style game where you control a network of magical trees with different special powers. These powers can be combined tactically to push back the encroaching darkness that seeks to destroy everything. The game plays over a number of levels with different threats and objectives.

Best Card Game App Sales

Reigns: Game of Thrones (Review) (iOS Universal and Android): $2.99

You've heard of Reigns. You've heard of Game of Thrones. You've likely heard of Reigns: Game of Thrones. Did you hear it is on sale for the first time? Grab it now for a buck off.

Reigns (Review) (iOS Universal and Android) $0.99
Reigns: Her Majesty (Review) (iOS Universal and Android): $0.99

You can also purchase the game that started it all, Reigns, as well as its sequel Reigns: Her Majesty for a buck each.

Sentinels of the Multiverse (Review) (iOS Universal and Android): $1.99

Handelabra's excellent hero-versus-villains card game Sentinels of the Multiverse is just two bucks for the base game.

Friday - by Friedemann Friese (Review) (iOS Universal and Android): $1.99

The digital version of Friday is a little short on polish but still a lot of fun. It's a couple bucks off in honor of holiday shopping.

Best RPG App Sales

Demon's Rise (iPad and Android): $1.49 on Android

Wave Light Game's excellent tactical fantasy RPG Demon's Rise is on sale on the Google Play Store for $1.50. If you don't have it yet and are rocking an Android, now's the time!

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (iOS Universal and Android): $2.99

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic is a little dated at this point but has long been enshrined as one of the best RPGs of all time. It's still a legitimate game to add to your mobile-game collection, especially at this sale price.

Baldur's Gate (Review) (iOS Universal and Android): $1.99 on iOS

Super old-school RPG, Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition, is also on sale for two bucks, down from $9.99.

Weapon Shop Fantasy (iOS Universal): $.99

One buck gets you RPG/simulation game Weapon Shop Fantasy where you build and enchant weapons and send adventurers off to defeat monsters with them.

Severed (Review) (iOS Universal): $1.99

A seriously strange RPG, Severed features trippy art, swipe-based combat, and a one-armed protagonist. This is the cheapest it's ever been. What else do you need?

Best of the Rest

Pocket City (Review) (iOS Universal and Android): $1.99

Pocket City is as close to SimCity as you can get on mobile, and will likely stay that way forever. It's more of a casual experience, but if you're in it for the joy of building you'll dig it.

Bonfire: Forsaken Lands (Review) (iOS Universal): $1.99

Bonfire is a mobile colony simulation game. It's fun for a while but peters out a bit after a few hours. Still, it's at its lowest price and worth a look if you enjoy this type of game.

Spaceplan (Review) (iOS Universal and Android): $.99

One of the strangest games of 2017 was the space-faring clicker Spaceplan. I found it to be fun, clever, and far from your usual clicker fare. Mark gave it 4 stars, so check out his review for more, but for a buck you don't have much to lose.

Mushroom 11 (iOS Universal and Android): $1.99 on iOS

Pocket Tactics doesn't cover a lot of platformers, but I'm going to make an exception for Mushroom 11 because it's really quite clever and fun. It's also on sale for the first time for $2.

Warlock of Firetop Mountain (Review) (iOS Universal): $4.99

Tin Man Games did a great job bringing this epic and classic tabletop adventure book to digital life and The Warlock is on sale for two bucks off.

Grimvalor (Review) (iOS Universal): $5.99

Dark Souls inspired Grimvalor is an action-RPG-platformer set in a gloomy fantasy world and featuring fast-paced combat. It just came out last month is now is on sale for the first time, $1 off.

Motorsport Manager Mobile 3 (Review) (iOS Universal and Android): $.99

Motorsport Manager Mobile 3 is a fantastic racing simulation game that puts you in charge of every aspect of a championship-chasing team. It's one of the best games of the year and is on sale for the first time for just a buck. That's quite a steal and you should buy it immediately.

Dungeon Maker (iOS Universal and Android): $.99 on Android

In tower-defense-like Dungeon Maker you must protect your hard-stolen treasure from adventurers and do-gooder heroes. It's an entertaining game and certainly worth a buck.

Don't Starve (Review) (iOS Universal and Android): $.99

Our 2015 action-game-of-the-year runner up is back on sale for just a dollar. At this point it's definitely in the oldie-but-goodie category.

Don't Starve Shipwrecked (Review) (iOS Universal and Android): $.99 on iOS

Want to avoid starving—or going crazy, or being eaten by some strange creature—on an island? Well, Don't Starve Shipwrecked is also just a buck on iOS.

Evoland 2 (iOS Universal and Android): $.99 on Android

Adventure your way through the history of video games in Evoland 2. It came out earlier this year and is at its lowest price ever on Android, just a dollar.

Monument Valley (Review) (iOS Universal and Android): $.99 on Android
Monument Valley 2 (Review) (iOS Universal and Android): $.99 on Android

Monument Valley is one the biggest puzzle games ever released on mobile. It's on sale for $1 on Android, as is its sequel which is a good game in its own right.

The Room: Old Sins (iOS Universal and Android): $1.49 on Android

The fourth and latest installment of The Room—the popular adventure/puzzle game series by Fireproof Games—is cheap on Android.

Sproggiwood (Review) (iOS Universal and Android): $1.99 on iOS

Lists of the best mobile roguelikes almost always include Sproggiwood. If you're a fan of the genre and haven't tried it out now's a great time to pick it up for just $2. The sale only appears for iOS at the moment but hopefully that changes.

Asteroid Quest! (iOS Universal and Android): $0

A fun game of space exploration, Asteroid Quest puts you in command of a mining ship that was stranded in a strange galaxy after an experiment gone wrong. It’s not a long game, I finished it in an hour and 45 minutes, but it’s compelling enough that I did so in one sitting. It’s also free right now.

Let us know if you spot any more deals, and we'll update the list!
