iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max Wi-Fi upgrade promises wicked fast speeds

The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are receiving a huge Wi-Fi upgrade, according to a new report, but the base model and Plus version miss out.

An iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max Wi-Fi 7 upgrade is reportedly on the cards, but that doesn’t seem to include the base model of the device. Wi-Fi 7 is the soon-to-be standard wireless technology that uses the usual 6GHz spectrum to make your internet speeds faster than ever before, and we’re expecting the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro to launch with this technology built-in.

Should this rumor, via DigiTimes, be true, the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models would have faster internet quality and connection speed than many cheaper competitor models. This upgrade would no doubt put the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max in contention for our list of the best 5G phones, beating out the speeds of last year’s iPhone 15 Pro Max by some way.

However, it appears that the base model and Plus version of the iPhone 16 aren’t getting the same treatment. As ever, there needs to be some differentiation between the standard models and the higher-priced Pro and Pro Max versions. We often see an extra camera on the more expensive alternatives, but another difference for this year’s device could be the Wi-Fi capabilities.

Wi-Fi 7 offers the very best connectivity since it allows data to be sent and received over 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz bands at the same time, which means devilishly fast internet speeds and much lower latency. Essentially, you’re getting a more reliable connection than ever. We won’t know if the base model of the iPhone 16 will come with Wi-Fi 7 until Apple officially unveils the device in a few weeks. While there is still a chance that the cheaper models will come with Wi-Fi 7 capabilities, it seems unlikely given these new details.

Competitors like Samsung already support Wi-Fi 7 on devices like the Galaxy S24 Ultra, which is one of many reasons why it tops our list of the best Samsung phones. So it comes as no surprise that Apple is playing catch-up in terms of speedier mobile internet connectivity. We’ll have to wait a little longer before we know whether the base model of the iPhone 16 is bestowed with the same gifts as its Pro and Pro Max counterparts.
