Is there a new Kid Icarus game coming out?
Nintendo has yet to announce a new Kid Icarus game. The franchise hasn't had any mainline games released since 2012's Kid Icarus Uprising. Despite the game's immense popularity and reverence from Nintendo fans across the world, there have only been a total of three Kid Icarus over the last 39 years! Yes, the first Kid Icarus game was released back in 1986, so excuse us while we feel old for a moment and let that sink in.
Despite a severe lack of new Kid Icarus games, it hasn't stopped Nintendo from showing love to the franchise in other ways. Alongside remakes of the first Kid Icarus game in 2004, 2007, and 2012 respectively, the franchise's lead character Pit has appeared in several Nintendo games, like one of the best Switch fighting games out there - Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
New Kid Icarus game platform speculation
As we have the Nintendo Switch 2, it is possible that a new Kid Icarus game may release on the hybrid console in the future. However, this is purely speculation until Nintendo confirms its plans for the franchise. We'd certainly love to see Pit get some next-gen glory, though, as Nintendo could revamp Kid Icarus for new audiences. Take one look at how the Metroid Prime remaster introduced fresh fans to the franchise and pleased long-time veterans.
We aren't the only ones hoping that Kid Icarus games leap from the confines of older platforms, too. In a video discussing the development of Kid Icarus Uprising, game director Masahiro Sakurai says that it is "a shame [it] only lived on 3DS, as I'd love to play on a bigger screen with smoother graphics, but without a team to work on it, crafting a follow-up seems difficult."
In another video on his channel, he even playfully suggests that a studio, whoever that might be, should give the franchise some remaster love. "It sure would be nice to play Kid Icarus Uprising on a home console. I wonder if someone will ever port it?" says Sakurai on his YouTube channel.
New Kid Icarus gameplay predictions
Kid Icarus Uprising was notable for giving the series its first-ever 3D treatment, shifting from the 2D-pixel art of its Game Boy and NES predecessors. Sporting quick third-person shooter gameplay, Uprising allows the player to battle in fantastic aerial-based on-rails segments, and a mixture of free roaming areas and linear missions.
You could even bet against your performance in the game, using 'hearts' to place wagers on how well you might fare in a chosen mission. It also used the 3DS' StreetPass feature to let players share weapons with each other, which is downright awesome. We reckon that a new Kid Icarus game could innovate on these elements, especially on the visual front. The Nintendo Switch 2 allegedly features hardware akin to the Xbox Series S, so a nice coat of next-gen goodness wouldn't go amiss.
However, we'd love to see Nintendo resurrect that nifty StreetPass feature in some capacity, as this would add an excellent co-op game aspect.
