Ahead of the handheld’s reveal, it appears that a first look at a Nintendo Switch 2 prototype model is here with early hardware details.

We’re all impatiently awaiting the Nintendo Switch 2’s reveal, but it seems that the gaming giant has been beaten to the punch. With no official announcement on the horizon anytime soon, your first glimpse of the Switch 2 seemingly comes in the form of a prototype model. Claims of the console’s hardware have us excited, but the design itself might not be the major overhaul you’re expecting.

A recent Reddit thread claims to display images of the Nintendo Switch 2, as user ‘MisterSheeple’ posts an array of screenshots showcasing the handheld in its digital form. The bulk of the images reveal the alleged Switch 2 design in a CAD render, with rounded edges on the surface and a notably bigger display, too. However, one of the best features of this supposed design is the addition of a USB-C port on the top of the Switch 2. No more awkward charging scenarios is a big win, if you ask us.

Digging deeper into the Switch 2’s hardware, specifications allege that it features 12GB of RAM, 256GB of internal storage, an 8-inch display, and magnetic slide rails. We previously reported on the possible inclusion of magnetic slide rails, as Nintendo has begun producing a brand-new charging stand. The specifications also match our report on a shipping leak from May this year.

Comparatively, the jump up from the original Switch’s 4GB of RAM gives the Switch 2 a 3x boost, while internal storage leaps up from 32GB. These features match claims from a shipping leak earlier this year. Whether you’re playing the best Switch games or new Switch games on the horizon, how will it actually perform?

Although the Switch 2’s hardware is yet to be verified, dataminer and leaker ‘NWPlayer123’ claimed in March 2022 that a potential Switch upgrade would feature DLSS 2.2 and ray tracing support. We speculate that it will perform in a middle ground between the PlayStation 4 and Xbox Series S, which could make it one of the best Steam Deck alternatives around.

Now, we just need the Nintendo Switch 2 release date to arrive. In the meantime, here’s everything we want from the Nintendo Switch 2 before it lands.
