Poppy Playtime's Doey is one of my favorite characters so far, and that's some high praise considering how much I love Kissy and the Wugster. Doey is one of the more interesting toys, with a backstory so tragic I want to burn the factory down for him. So, let's take a look at your steadfast ally in Safe Haven, as we dive into his history, role in the story, personality, and more.
Still, if you're happy to read on, we can tell you everything you need to know about the Poppy Playtime character. However, it's even more important that you learn who your enemies are, so make sure you also read our Poppy Playtime Yarnaby and Poppy Playtime Nightmare Critters guides to learn some crucial information about the Poppy Playtime Chapter 4 antagonists.
Here's what you need to know about Poppy Playtime's Doey:

Who is Poppy Playtime's Doey?
His full name is Doey the Doughman, and Playtime Co. created him in the 1950s, making him the company's second huge hit after Poppy herself. He's by far one of the more interesting experiments to occur in the Poppy Playtime factory. While turning poor children into toys is nothing new, Doey represents a first for the company in that three young boys make up the Bigger Bodies version of the toy: Jack Ayers, Kevin Barnes, and Matthew Hallard. Yes, you read that right. Three kids with varying personalities make up Doey, but more on that in a minute.
Another thing that makes Doey quite an unusual experiment, beyond the use of three children, is that one of them isn't even an orphan from Playcare. The first child, Jack, actually had an accident while on a tour of the Playtime Co. factory, during which he fell into a vat mixer full of dough, which more than likely killed him. Six weeks after the incident, the insidious company contacted Jack's parents, claiming they could bring their son back. Listening to Playtime Co. proved fatal for the pair, as the scientists lock them in a room with Doey.
Not only does Jack not remember his parents (at first), but Doey then brutally kills them after a different personality takes over, and this is Kevin. Now, to be fair to the boy, he didn't know he was brutally murdering the parents of another innocent victim; the boy thought he was getting even with the people who did this to him. The final lad in this trio of personalities is Matthew, a well-mannered and mature teenager whose mannerisms are in stark contrast to Kevin's.
It's hard to say for certain, but it appears as though each boy had some desirable qualities, and the scientists felt that they could get the best out of all three by molding them into one toy.
Poppy Playtime Doey's personality
Doey's personality comes down to 'who's in control.' With three different boys with three distinct personalities, Doey has a certain level of complexity. It goes without saying that it's possible for Doey to feel unrivaled rage and anger. This is the work of Kevin. This boy was known for his furious temper tantrums and violent outbursts. For the most part, Doey does a good job of keeping this side of him subdued, though there are moments throughout Safe Haven where this personality shines through.
However, Doey's 'primary' personality that tends to be on display is that of Mattnew, which makes sense considering he's the oldest and most mature of the three boys. This side of Doey is incredibly kind, as he wants to do all he can to help those around him, making him such an effective leader at Safe Haven. He's a strong individual that you can count on, even in your darkest hour, as he strives to put on a brave face, though too much stress unleashes the beast, so to speak.
The final third of Doey's personality comes from Jack, that innocent kid who loved his Doey toy so much that he went on a tour of the factory only to fall into the vat. This is Doey's innocent side, the one who longs for a normal life and mourns what he has lost.

Poppy Playtime Doey's role in the story
If you want to better understand the events of Chapter 4, you need to know how Poppy Playtime's Doey factors in, as he's one of the most important characters in this part of the story, serving as the steadfast leader of Safe Haven, doing all he can to protect the toys. Unfortunately, all his efforts are for naught, as you soon discover. If you want to know more, read on with caution.
SPOILER WARNING
With that big spoiler warning out of the way, let's move on to what role Doey plays. Initially, Doey is an important ally, saving you from a horrific fate at the hands of Poppy Playtime's Pianosaurus. It turns out that he's one of the leaders of Safe Haven, a place where innocent toys go to escape the wrath of the Prototype and other murderous beings. While he's a steadfast ally to Poppy, the pair have very different opinions regarding Poppy's plan to destroy the Poppy Playtime factory. He wants to save as many toys as possible, while she favors killing everyone.
As the chapter progresses, you have to go and take down Dr. Sawyer, which regrettably gives the Prototype an opening to attack Safe Haven despite the efforts of Doey, which leads to the deaths of many innocent toys, all of which Doey blames himself for. His guilt overrides him, unleashing a ghastly beast as Kevin's personality takes complete control, leading Doey to attack you in a fit of rage. Ultimately, you have to kill Doey, and then it's time for the closing events of Safe Haven. To really rub salt in the wounds, Matthew and Jack apologize to you. The feels with this one.
That's the long and short of Doey's involvement; he's a true hero who, unfortunately, suffered unimaginable losses and succumbed to the anger inside him. The Prototype and, quite frankly, Poppy have much to answer for. Doey, we will do all we can to help any other innocent toys we come across in this hellhole - they will see the sun again, my friend.
Poppy Playtime Doey appearances
While Poppy Playtime's Doey makes his physical debut in Safe Haven, he does get a very brief mention in Chapter 3, though it's not Doey's name you hear but Kevin's. As much as we'd love to see this dedicated toy once more, the ending he meets in Chapter 4 feels pretty permanent. Then again, a surprise appearance at the end of the chapter shows that not everything is always as it seems, so perhaps there's hope yet. We doubt it, but let's be optimistic.
With that, you know everything you need to know about Poppy Playtime's Doey. He has quite a tragic tale, from his origins to his fate in Safe Haven, and for that, we have to admit we hold him in high regard, along with the likes of Poppy Playtime's Kissy Missy and Poppy Playtime's Huggy Wuggy.
