I've been bored with Star Wars shows and promises of better movies for a while now. However, the one thing the series seems to be getting right is games. Jedi Survivor and the redemption of Battlefront 2? I'm here for it, and now there's another entry, but this one is landing on the small screen. In a vague announcement, Lucasfilm teases a brand-new card game, but what makes it different?
Star Wars: Assault Team and Star Wars: Card Trader aren't exactly removed from this concept. Assault Team is a turn-based deck game, primarily focused on exploring locations and collecting characters from the original trilogy. However, you can't play it anymore. Card Trader is more encompassing, jumping across the entire franchise, and it's still going strong today. They're hardly among the best Star Wars games, though. Yet, it isn't exactly Lucasfilm's first foray into this space, that's for sure.
Revealing the new Star Wars game in a short blog post, the statement shares that Zero36 Studio and CCG Lab are partnering with Lucasfilm Games to launch the untitled project on iOS, Android, and PC. While there's no mention of Steam Deck support, we can safely assume that a card game isn't exactly going to put it through its paces. The game features an "all-star roster of your favorite characters like Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader," and promises to "bring the saga to life in a fresh new way for the genre."
What this means is unclear, but I suspect that a fully-fledged reveal could be on the cards with The Game Awards looming. Because if there's one thing Geoff Keighley likes to unveil, it's free mobile games. Speaking about the game, CCG Lab CEO Cory Jones expresses that "together with Zero36 Studio and Lucasfilm Games, we're creating something truly exciting for players and fans alike, an experience that celebrates the joy of play in the galaxy far, far away."
He adds that "our mission is to craft an experience that captures the thrill, adventure, and heart of Star Wars, a game that feels instantly familiar yet constantly surprising." Zero36 Studio is part of Bytedance, the company behind TikTok, CapCut, and Lemon8. CCG Lab, you may remember as the driving force for DC Dual Force, a short-lived deck experience featuring iconic heroes and villains across the world of DC Comics.
