Who is Wuthering Waves’ Mortefi?
Mortefi is head of the department that makes tacetite weapons in the Department of Safety, as part of the Huaxu Academy. He’s an expert in his field though has a reputation for his anger – which led him to transform his frustration into fusion flames he can use on the battlefield. Just… don’t get on his bad side.
He wields pistols, and the fusion element, and is a great buffer and sub-DPS in teams that can add heavy attack damage with his outro skill.
How to use Mortefi
Mortefi is a great sub-DPS and buffer in a lot of teams. To make the best use of his kit, make sure to deploy his ultimate just before swapping to your main DPS to trigger his outro skill, giving a 38% heavy attack damage bonus. If you have the Impermanence Heron equipped on Mortefi, you can use this for an even greater damage bonus on your DPS.
What are Mortefi’s stats?
Here are Mortefi’s base stats at level one and level 90, without any echo or weapon buffs.
Stat | Level one | Level 90 |

Attack | 20 | 250 |
Defense | 93 | 1137 |
Max energy | 125 | 125 |

What are Mortefi’s skills?
Mortefi’s key abilities are his resonance liberation, outro skill, and forte circuit – but his normal attacks can also help to chip away at enemies’ HP during the downtime.
Mortefi’s active skills
Skill | Effect |
Basic attack – Impromptu Show | Mortefi uses dual pistols and flames to attack enemies four consecutive times. This deals fusion damage |
Heavy attack | Mortefi enters aiming stance for a more powerful shot. This deals heavier fusion damage |
Mid-air attack | Mortefi consumes stamina to shoot consecutive shots at enemies from mid-air, dealing fusion damage |
Dodge counter | Use Mortefi’s basic attack after a successful dodge to attack the target with fusion damage |
Resonance skill – Passionate Variation | Launch a barrage of flames toward enemies, dealing fusion damage |
Resonance Liberation – Violent Finale | Mortefi deals fusion damage to enemies and applies Burning Rhapsody to all characters on the team. Burning Rhapsody When the active character’s basic attack hits a target, a coordinated attack launches one time (one Marcato hit). When a character’s heavy attack hits a target, two Marcato hits get fired. Mortefi can launch a co-ordinated attack once every 0.35 seconds |
Intro skill – Dissonance | Mortefi attacks the target with fusion damage |
Outro skill – Rage Transposition | The next character – on your team or in co-op – has their heavy attack damage amplified by 38% for 14 seconds, or until they switch off field |
Mortefi’s passive skills
Skill | Effect |
Forte circuit – Fury Fugue | Resonance skill – Fury Fugue When Mortefi’s ‘Annoyance’ reaches 100, his resonance skill turns into Fury Fugue. When casting this skill, he consumes all Annoyance to unleash flames toward enemies. This counts as resonance skill damage Annoyance Mortefi can hold 100 Annoyance at once. When Impromptu Show, Dissonance, and Passionate Variation hit a target, he restores Annoyance. Any targets hit within five seconds of using Passionate Variation restores additional Annoyance |
Inherent skill – Harmonic Control (unlockable at resonator rank two) | When using Passionate Variation, the damage of Fury Fugue increases by 25% for eight seconds |
Inherent skill – Rhythmic Vibrato (unlockable after Harmonic Control) | During Burning Rhapsody, each hit of Marcato increases the damage of the next Marcato instance by 1.5%. This can trigger once every 0.35 seconds and can stack 50 times. This effect resets after Burning Rhapsody ends |
What’s the best weapon for Mortefi?
Mortefi uses the pistol type of weapon, and there are a few options on what to give him. He doesn’t have a signature weapon, as he’s a four-star, but the best pistol for Mortefi is the five-star Static Mist with its energy regeneration. The Undying Flame is another great option that increases his resonance skill damage, ensuring he deals more fusion damage to enemies.
We all know what the gacha can be like, so if you have a few Pistols of Night knocking around, you can refine them into one to make a strong three-star option.
Weapon | Effect |
Static Mist (five-star) | Increases energy regeneration by 12.8%. When Mortefi casts his outro skill, his attack increases by 10%. This effect lasts for 14 seconds |
Undying Flame (four-star) | When Mortefi casts his intro skill, his resonance skill damage gets a 20% boost for 15 seconds |
Novaburst (four-star) | When Mortefi dashes or dodges, his attack increases by 4%. This can stack three times and lasts for eight seconds |
Pistols of Night (three-star) | When Mortefi casts his intro skill, his attack increases by 8% for ten seconds |
What are the best echoes for Mortefi?
When picking an echo set for Mortefi, it’s best to aim for a five-piece set of moonlit clouds or two pieces of molten rift and two pieces of moonlit clouds for the energy regeneration and fusion damage boosts.
The best main echo to equip Mortefi with is the Impermanence Heron. While you can use other damage-boosting echoes like the Inferno Rider, the Heron can give ten extra energy to the next character you use, and if Mortefi’s outro skill triggers during the swap, the next character also gets a 12% damage boost for 15 seconds. This is incredibly handy in the Tower of Adversity game mode where damage per second is key.
Recommended echo | Effect |
Impermanence Heron | Transforming into the Impermanence Heron performs a dive attack, or holding the echo button lets you stay as the Heron and deal constant havoc damage for a few seconds. After the attack, the current character gains ten resonance energy and gains an outro skill boost for 15 seconds. This also gives a damage boost of 12% for the next character, for 15 seconds |
Inferno Rider | Transform into the Inferno Rider and deal three consecutive hits, dealing increasingly heavy fusion damage. After the final hit, Mortefi (or your current character)’s fusion damage and basic attack damage increase by 12% for 15 seconds |
Mortefi stat recommendations

Main stats
- Energy regeneration
- Fusion damage
- Crit damage/crit rate
- Attack%
Sub-stats

- Crit rate/crit damage
- Attack%
What’s the best Mortefi team?
Mortefi slots into a team as a buffer and sub-DPS – while he’s cool, we don’t recommend him as a main DPS, even with all resonance chains unlocked. The best DPS to pair him with is Jiyan, but if you use heavy attacks frequently, you can make the most of his outro skill.
The best synergies for Mortefi are:
- Wuthering Waves Jiyan – using Mortefi’s coordinated attacks in tandem with Jiyan’s resonance liberation is fun and deals plenty of damage with both aero and fusion elements. Mortefi’s heavy attack damage goes a long way in boosting Jiyan, too.
- Wuthering Waves Jinhsi – similar to Jiyan, Mortefi can boost Jinhsi’s heavy attack boost. His coordinated attacks help to add to her damage as well as the more she has, the better coupled with her own.
- Wuthering Waves Danjin – Danjin deals most of her damage using heavy attacks, so Mortefi’s damage deepen really comes in handy with her. His coordinated attacks also help to deal extra damage with her.
- Wuthering Waves Verina provides healing and an attack boost, but you can also use Wuthering Waves Baizhi to keep your team at full health.

What is Mortefi’s resonance chain?
If you get more than one copy of Mortefi on the banners – or purchase his wavebands from the in-game store – you can unlock levels of his resonance chain.
Here’s what Mortefi’s wavebands unlock:
Resonance sequence chain | Effect |
Level one – Solitary Etude | During Burning Rhapsody, Mortefi launches coordinated attacks when the on-field character uses their resonance skills – firing off two Marcato hits |
Level two – Hypocritical Hymn | After using his echo skill, Mortefi restores an extra ten resonance energy. This can trigger once every 20 seconds |
Level three – Flaming Recitativo | During Burning Rhapsody, the crit damage of Marcato increases by 30% |
Level four – Cathartic Waltz | Burning Rhapsody’s duration extends by seven seconds |
Level five – Funerary Quartet | When Passionate Variation or Fury Fugue hits a target, four Marcato hits fire off, dealing fusion damage. However, reduces damage from these by 50% |
Level six – Apopletic Instrumental | When Mortefi casts Violent Finale, the attack of all teammates increases by 20% for 20 seconds |
