Mobile games are great at putting all manner of genres right in your pocket, ready to play at any time, in any place. Sometimes you’re staying away from home, and need something long and engrossing, or sitting in a waiting room, looking for something simple and calming. Other times, you just want to jump straight into the action. This is where Smash Party comes in.
You know when you’re commuting and you’ve only got one free hand? Or walking what feels like the world’s slowest dog? Carrying shopping bags and waiting for a bus? Sometimes you want a game that asks very little of you but offers a big reward, and Smash Party literally takes the lifting of one finger to play.
Build your ragtag team of three and pick up some adorable weapons as you fight to save the city. You won’t have to wait around as Smash Party drops you right in the middle of the action wherever you are.
Form your squad from pals or online matches and take up your role as a police officer in a chaotic city of colourful criminals. You’ll unlock perks as you progress, allowing you to invite friends into your battles, and form the ultimate team of officers.
Each game pits you against a wealth of enemies, with just three of you on the side of the city. Protect the citizens (and the city itself) from the nefarious plans of each boss, unlocking more creative and challenging foes as you progress. At the speed these guys move, you’ll need every member of your team to be on top form.
In amongst the chaos you’ll collect an assortment of weapons, ready to be used in one-finger combat. Equip your character before the job, selecting the right equipment to give you the upper hand against each level boss. Pistols, assault rifles, baseball bats, rockets, flame throwers, and grenades are just some of the implements of destruction you can use in this seemingly cutesy world. Weapons can be upgraded and developed, allowing you an even more satisfying rush with every match.
You’ll start off decked out in traditional police garb, but more outfits and gear will pop up along the way. Kit your hero out in whatever you like – giving them a unique appearance will help you spot them amongst the primary-coloured world during high-speed battles.
They really are high-speed, too. Shots can come from all angles, disarming and dispersing your troupe, so keep your head in the game – it’s always the fastest finger first. Aim by holding your finger down on the screen, then release it to send waves of powerful fire in your enemy’s direction. You’ll have obstacles and barriers to hide behind and manoeuvre around, so think fast and react first.
Rush in headfirst, tearing down enemies as you go, or plan your strategy and unleash structured attacks – as long as you think on your feet, you’ll be fine. After a series of minions and low-level bad-guys have been taken out, you’ll find yourself face to face with the level boss, each with their own skills and attack styles.
During your bullet-strewn race through the city, your officer will come up against some big bad bosses. Smash Party’s mascot, the adorable pink bunny, will jump out in World 1-10, wielding an assault rifle and the ability to spring out of the way with unpredictable speed. Another of these fearsome-but-fuzzy bosses is the tiger, a master of the katana and up-close melee attacks. Learn to dodge his sword and use your sense of rhythm to deal your own damage between his powerful blows.
Each world has its own boss with its own weapon, so keep an eye out for your next rival. Will you go in swinging with the same weapon, or use a completely different counter-attack? Either way, once the bullets start flying, you’ll have a hard time putting Smash Party down.
