The wait is over - Torchlight: Infinite is officially in its open beta phase, bringing its high-intensity dungeon-crawling thrills to Android, iOS, and PC. A further instalment in a much-loved series of games that have received significant critical acclaim, Torchlight: Infinite is just as gorgeous and captivating as its predecessors.
Introducing a host of colourful characters and some deeply satisfying combat, Torchlight: Infinite is entirely free-to-play, meaning you can get stuck into some hack-and-slash fun right away. Player progress from the open beta will carry over to the full launch, so there's no excuse not to drop in and get a feel for the all-new world right now.
As fans have come to expect from games bearing the Torchlight title, Infinite is full of varied dungeons to crawl, memorable characters, and endless possibilities for customising each build. After a series of cinematic trailers, we've been introduced to some of the characters, locations, and loot, so we're jumping into the ancient city of Ichi to see what all the fuss is about…
Choose your fighter
Don't worry, we'll get to the loot and the dungeons themselves, but first let's take a look at the chaotic cast of characters players can choose from in Torchlight: Infinite. At present there are six new heroes for you to play as, each with 24 talent tabs, and access to more than 200 items of legendary gear and 230 powerful skill upgrades. XD Studio, the developers of the new generation of Torchlight games, have already hinted at many more characters to be revealed during the launch phase of the game and beyond.
The first of these six is Thea, the Oracle, who harnesses arcane knowledge and the wisdom of the gods. Moto is the second, a fearsome heavyweight decked out with bionic fists, while the third is Carino, the firepower expert and gunslinger. Rehan is fourth, a hulking berserker with an enormous sword, and lastly are Gemma - a frost-wielding mage - and Youga who can twist the very fabric of time and space.
Each of these characters has their own special powers and abilities, along with varied weapons and loot. Play to your strengths or challenge yourself, it's up to you.
Explore the world
At the outset of Torchlight: Infinite, you've been tasked with restoring light and brilliance to a darkened land. No pressure, then. Luckily, these elite heroes have the skills they need to battle through dungeon after dungeon and make things safe once again.
As you travel and explore, you'll uncover more of the story and unlock more of the world, expanding your access to those sweet loot-filled dungeons. Grinding is expected and encouraged in this game, so prepare to work your way up from rusty old swords to legendary weapons. During combat, there are no cooldowns or stamina bars to worry about, so you'll always be in top condition.
Get buffed
Your characters can be built in a variety of ways, depending on your chosen play style and technique. You can switch a character's armour, clothing, shield, and weapons as you go - and will start to assign specific talents to your hero.
As it's a free-to-play game, all the assets that can be added to your hero are loot-based. Prepare to grind hard and be rewarded with some insanely powerful gear. If you're wanting something specific, you can even engage in in-game trade with other players - or simply dedicate yourself to the grind once more.
