Welcome to Lordran. We hope you enjoy your stay and get a kick out of seeing the words ‘you died’ over, and over, again. Truly, it’s a special place to be. There are many dilapidated locations to visit, enemies to slaughter, and, of course, plenty of bosses to face. To survive such conditions, and defeat these strong foes, you need a weapon, and fortunately, Dark Souls offers you plenty of choices, all of which are upgradeable.
With our Dark Souls divine weapon guide, we aim to help you upgrade your trusty blade to the point where Gravelord Nito will run back to his grave. There are many Dark Souls weapon upgrade paths, all of which offer a different strength against varying enemies. However, this guide centres on Dark Souls divine weapons, which are incredibly useful for combating those awful skellys in The Catacombs and Tomb of the Giants.
If some of Lordran’s more dangerous citizens are proving to be a pain, you should check out our Dark Souls bosses guide. It’s full of strategies and useful tips on the best ways to approach any boss. It’s also worth a look if you’re after a brief history lesson on how these beings came to be.
What is a Dark Souls divine weapon?
It’s a weapon type, one that is applicable to most weapons. However, it’s important to note that you can’t apply buffs to divine weapons, so pick your path carefully, and make sure that this is the right choice for you.
Divine weapons scale with faith and receive magic damage, but this comes at the cost of physical offence, meaning it might not be a wise choice for straight-up melee fighters that rely on strength or dexterity.
How do I get a Dark Souls divine weapon?
There are various steps you must take to get this weapon upgrade path:
- Find the divine ember in Darkroot Garden (travel up the tower after defeating the Moonlight Butterfly, the petrified blacksmith is holding it)
- Return the divine ember to Andre of Astora below the bonfire in Undead Parish
- Upgrade a standard weapon to +5
- Give Andre the standard weapon and some green titanite shards
- Now you have a +1 divine weapon
How do I upgrade a Dark Souls divine weapon?
With the divine ember you already gave Andre, you can get all divine weapons to +5 by providing the blacksmith with green titanite shards. However, if you want to get to +6 and beyond, you’re going to need the large divine ember.
To find the large divine ember, you must defeat Pinwheel in The Catacombs, then head into the Tomb of Giants. Before you reach the first bonfire, you can find this item in a square hole, but it’s under the protection of six giant skeletons. You have two options, face these horrible enemies in what is essentially pure darkness, or make a beeline for the ember. We suggest spending your souls, then dash for it.
Now you have the large ember, return to Andre. To upgrade your divine weapon to between +6 and +9, you need white titanite chunks. Then, to max out the weapon at +10, you need a white titanite slab.
Where is the Dark Souls white titanite slab?
There’s just one of these items in the base game, and it’s found in Tomb of the Giants in the room just before Gravelord Nito’s boss room. A second white titanite slab is available through the Artorias of the Abyss DLC, and is waiting for you just before the Manus, Father of the Abyss battle.
We should mention that white titanite slabs are not only needed to fully upgrade divine weapons, but also complete the Dark Souls occult weapon upgrade path. So weigh up which one is a better fit for you if you can’t grab both white titanite slabs.
