Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s Guardians are hiding a cheeky surprise

Normally a terrifying foe that patrols the fields of Hyrule, a recent viral post is reminding fans of the Zelda: Breath of the Wild Guardian smiley face.

Even after six years, Breath of the Wild is still full of surprises. However, this time fans are discovering the Zelda: Breath of the Wild Guardian’s smiley face, a slightly cheeky hidden secret, making this enemy much less scary. Breath of the Wild Link’s battles with the laser-firing enemies are now much funnier.

Nintendo originally revealed the Guardian’s hidden face in concept art, visible in the Breath of the Wild Creating a Champion book. The concept art features a Guardian lifting their helmet to Link, seemingly greeting him much like a human might doff a hat. It’s a hilarious image, even bringing to mind the infamous *Tips Fedora* meme from the simpler days of the internet.

Twitter user Zelda Gif World (@GifZelda) is behind the resurgence of this strange fact, as a post sharing the image is currently sitting at over 50k likes. Many fans are reveling in the new information, with Twitter user @NSuperGameGuy commenting “he was smiling every time I got shot”, while another user @GDIBoogie writes underneath the viral post saying “”M’Linky~” *Blasts with laser*”. It’s a fun, if inconsequential thing, that adds another layer of charm to a perfect game.

For an even better look at the smiling Guardian, we’ve dug out our copy of Creating a Champion to confirm the very cute face below. While there aren’t any smiling (or frowning) Guardians in Link’s latest adventure, be sure to check out Zelda Tears of the Kingdom to see why it’s a worthy sequel to Breath of the Wild that redefines the open-world genre: again.
