There’s already a Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom item duplication glitch

The Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom item duplication glitch sort of breaks the game, but it also makes its economy much more forgiving. Free rupees, anyone?

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is taking the game (social media) world by storm, and just like Red Dead 2 before it, there’s a way to easily duplicate items and get a bunch of rupees. It may sort of feel like cheating, but I now have tens of thousands of rupees and it’s a thrill.

As discovered by @ItsBenjaninja on Twitter (via Kotaku), the Tears of the Kingdom item duplication glitch is pretty quick and easy. You can find the steps to recreating it below, plus some tips from someone who’s been abusing it for a while.

If you want to load up on rupees, we recommend focusing on duplicating diamonds and getting them sold – they go for 500 rupees each. You can duplicate any item that you can fuse to the end of the arrow, so you can farm good monster bits, hoard a bunch of armour-upgrading items, and anything else you fancy.

How do I do the Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom item duplication glitch?

It’s quite easy to perform TotK’s duplication glitch, though it can also be a bit fiddly. Here are the steps to recreate it:

  • Aim your bow with ZR
  • Press up on the d-pad to fuse the item you want to duplicate
  • Press the ‘+’ button to open the menu
  • Head to your inventory
  • Drop the bow you’re holding
  • Equip a new bow
  • Press the ‘+’ button twice, very quickly, to leave and return to the inventory
  • Drop the second bow you equipped
  • Leave the menu
  • Pick up both bows

Now, your item should be duplicated. The difficulty here is the double-tap of the ‘+’ button. You can see if you’ve not been quick enough – i.e. if Link is further through his animation so that the bow is below its horizontal angle (see photo below) – then you’ve missed it. It took me a dozen or so tries before I got the hang of it, so be patient. There’s a video from Relyea on YouTube below for all you visual learners.
