IFA 2023: JBL’s new earbuds don’t even go in your ears

We're on the ground at IFA 2023 and have all the latest on the new JBL SoundGear Sense launch and much more from the audio wizards at Harmon.

JBL has announced the new SoundGear Sense, a pair of earbuds that sit on your ear rather than going inside them. This comes alongside updates to the 670NC and 770NC, as well as a bunch of new speakers.

The SoundGear Sense is designed so you can hear your environment, with JBL saying this helps protect your ear. At the launch event in Berlin for IFA 2023, JBL’s Michael Herje compared it to having a speaker in the room without disturbing anyone, thanks to the lightweight design.

The 16mm driver rests on top of your ear, meaning folks who can’t get AirPods to stay in without some gymnastics should have more luck. They’re attached by a flexible hook and come with a detachable neckband. Availability starts from today and they cost €149.99, though a US release is yet to be confirmed.

Meanwhile, the third generation of the 670NC and 770NC receive updates, with a snugger fit to help noise isolation and softer cushions on the cup and strap. This all comes alongside a wide range of new speakers from the company, with the massive PartyBox Ultimate bringing boombox vibes to the max, and the new Authentic Series being JBL’s bet to take over the home, not just outdoors.
