Of all the video game characters who deserve their own day, it’s safe to say that Mario “Mr. Video” Mario, as the most prolific character in gaming history, definitely deserves his ‘MAR10 Day’. Very few gamers will be able to say that they’ve not played at least one game with Mario in it, whether that’s as a fighter in Smash Bros., a racer in Mario Kart, or more directly through the main series of platforming adventures.
2022 marks 41 years since we first met Mario back in the Donkey Kong arcade game. Somehow, it wasn’t the mischievous gorilla that people latched onto (although Donkey does have his fans, including me), but rather the unassuming middle-aged carpenter (yes, he was a carpenter originally) with a moustache. Now he’s appeared in literally hundreds of different games, many of which are considered among the most influential games ever created.
