If you like the idea of a clamshell foldable but the sky-high prices that usually come with such devices have put you off, then the Nubia Flip 5G might be the phone for you. Initially revealed at MWC 2024, this budget-focused device is now available for pre-order globally, following the Nubia Flip 5G launch, and it only costs $499, making it the cheapest foldable phone that we’ve seen so far.

Unfortunately, this global release currently excludes the UK and Europe, but US readers can get in on the action. Starting on April 23, the phone is launching in 19 countries including Australia, Thailand, Malaysia, Pakistan, and the United Arab Emirates.

The Nubia Flip 5G runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoC and comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. There’s also a version with 12GB RAM and 512GB of storage available for $699. Both models feature a 4,310 mAh battery and support up to 33W fast charging. With all that in mind, it looks like we could have a new budget pick for our list of the best flip phones.

The foldable OLED display measures 6.9 inches and features a 120Hz refresh rate and a 2160Hz PWM dimming rate. On the outside, you’ll find a 1.43-inch circular display, which reminds me of a smartwatch screen. As usual, you can use this smaller display to check notifications, control media playback, or even use it as a viewfinder for selfie snaps.

When it comes to cameras, you get a 50MP main camera, a 2MP depth sensor for portrait mode, and a 16MP punch-hole selfie camera on the main display. The Nubia Flip is available in three color options, Sunshine Gold, Cosmic Black, and Flowing Lilac. The latter is the boldest and most unique finish, with a pattern that shifts as the light hits it, while the other options are more subtle affairs.

If you think the Nubia Flip might be the phone for you, then it’s available to pre-order now on Nubia’s website. There’s no word on a European launch just yet, but the UK website features the device, so it’s safe to say that it’ll be available in the near future.
