Pokémon Platinum is great for a lot of reasons, making some nice adjustments to the already great Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, as well as introducing some great new features. But the biggest success will always be in welcoming the amazing origin version of Giratina, a form I’d argue still holds up as one of the single best Pokémon designs to this day. Just look at that beast.

If you want to add Pokémon Go Giratina to your team, well, you’ve come to the right place. This monstrous ghost/dragon-type has the stats to back up its terrifying look, but that also makes it elusive to find and capture. So if you want a Giratina to call your own, you need to do the work to back it up!

Before we delve into the distorted realm and greet the gargantuan ghastly beast known as Giratina, Pokémon fans should check out our other great guides covering topics like the best gen 4 Pokémon, best gen 1 Pokémon, best dragon Pokémon, best starter Pokémon, best water Pokémon, and the best games like Pokemon on Switch.

Let’s go trainers, it’s time to dive into our guide to Pokémon Go Giratina.

What is Pokémon Go Giratina?

Number 487 in the pokédex, the ghost/dragon-type Giratina is the box legendary of Pokémon Platinum, the third pillar release that complements Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, making various changes and improvements to those titles while also introducing Giratina’s origin form and a new area known as The Distorted World. While Dialga and Palkia represent time and space, respectively, Giratina represents antimatter.

How do I catch Pokémon Go Giratina?

As a legendary Pokémon, Giratina only appears in five-star raids, so we recommend you have at least four or five trainers in your raid party before you challenge it. It’s currently set to appear in five-star raids over the following dates in October 2022.

Giratina (altered form)  October 20 – October 27
Giratina (origin form) October 27 – November 8

As and when it becomes available in raids again after these dates, we’ll update this guide and let you know. In addition, you can read our Pokémon Go raids guide to see what other Pokémon are appearing in raids soon.

How do I use Pokémon Go Giratina?

If you plan to use Giratina on your team, the first thing you need to choose is which form you want to use. Unlike mainline Pokémon games, you cannot use an item to change Giratina’s form. Instead, they’re split into two different Pokémon that you have to catch separately. There’s a small difference in stats, but the biggest contrast is that Giratina’s origin form gains a ground immunity, thanks to its ability to levitate. This makes it more of a threat to ground monsters like Garchomp, Hippowdon, and Landorus.

While Giratina can learn the rock move ancient power, you almost always want to make use to use its dragon or ghost-type moves for the STAB bonus. Because of its typing, Giratina becomes a big threat to lots of psychic and dragon-type Pokémon. Below is a list of Pokémon most vulnerable to Giratina.

  • Deoxys
  • Mewtwo
  • Hoopa
  • Lunala
  • Jirachi
  • Metagross
  • Chandelure
  • Dusknoir
  • Gallade
  • Cresselia
  • Slowbro (Galarian)

How do I counter Pokémon Go Giratina?

With both ghost Pokémon and dragon-types being weak to themselves, honestly, Giratina’s worst enemy is itself or the many other ghost and dragon-types out there. If you’re looking to slay the beast in raids, then a quick ghost-type like Gengar can certainly help, or you can play on its weaknesses with any number of dark-types. Below is a list of Pokémon that are effective against Giratina.

  • Darkrai
  • Gengar
  • Kyurem (black)
  • Zacian
  • Palkia
  • Rayquaza
  • Salamence
  • Hydreigon
  • Weavile
  • Zoroark

We hope this guide took you to the distorted realm and back, and landed you a Giratina for your troubles. But if you’re still not the very best and want to net even more legendary #mon, check out our Pokémon Go Genesect guide next.
