Hades 2 Thalamus guide

Hades 2 Thalamus is a valuable material required when you bust out of the Underworld and head to the surface, and you need its protection to survive topside.

A depiction of primordial Chaos in Hades 2

Hades 2 Thalamus is an invaluable source of late-game protection when Melinoë finally breaks out of the Underworld and explores the surface realm. Like a gamer emerging from an accidental 12-hour session, with clawed fingers and blinking eyes, Melinoë needs this magic plant to keep her alive in the fresh air and sunlight. We’ve all been there.

Thalamus only has one use in Hades 2, but it’s also quite a necessity, so if you’re wondering how to get your hands on the precious plant, then we’re here to help with this guide. If you’re after even more info on Supergiant’s massive sequel, check out our exhaustive list of Hades 2 characters, plus we explain all of the available Hades 2 weapons to help you take down the titan of time.

How do I find Hades 2 Thalamus?

Thalamus can only be found once you’ve crossed paths with the primordial incarnation of Chaos. After you’ve descended into the realm of Chaos, through Chaos gates that pop up sporadically as they did in the original game, you’ll be in the right place to find Origin Seeds, which you can then eventually plant to harvest Thalamus.

Chaos gates, the swirling black pits that appear at random after an encounter, allow you to descend to the Chaos realm instead of moving forward. Be warned, however, because you’ll have to take a substantial amount of damage in order to jump into the void, so make sure you have enough health to do so.

How do I grow Hades 2 Thalamus?

You can dig up Origin Seeds with the Silver Shovel by interacting with dirt mounds, and once you have them, you can plant them in the Crossroads, Melinoë’s home base where you return after each run. You need to unlock the Flourishing Soil incantation in order to get your hands on some pots of soil, and then you can grow as many Origin Seeds as you please in order to get your hands on some Thalamus. Chaos will also gift Melinoë with an Origin Seed after your first venture to the surface.

You won’t be bestowed with this life-saving plant as soon as you pot them, however. Be patient, because it takes real-world time to grow Thalamus. Once planted in the Crossroads, you’ll have to clear seven encounters in a run in order to return and find a fully grown Thalamus plant. Or you could simply wait in the hot springs, or in Taverna, if you’ve got them unlocked. When fully grown, you’ll be able to harvest two Thalamus from each Origin Seed.

How do I use Hades 2 Thalamus?

When you venture up to the surface realm, you take periodic damage as soon as you arrive. Considering Melinoë is the Chthonic goddess of ghosts and nightmares, it makes sense that she’d have an almost vampiric affliction when she explores the world above the Underworld.

Hades 2 Thalamus Unraveling of a Fateful Bond incantation

To survive topside, you need to cast the Unraveling of a Fateful Bond incantation which allows you to breathe that fresh air and feel the sunlight on your skin without burning to a crisp or choking to death. Thalamus is one of four ingredients needed for this life-saving incantation, along with nightshade, moss, and lotus. But once the incantation is performed, you’ll be able to explore the surface at will.
