Just a week after the grand unveiling of the Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, a Google Pixel 8a leak has given us a look at the 8 series’ forthcoming mid-range model. It’s not an all-encompassing leak, but it’s enough to get a decent idea of what to expect when Google eventually unveils its more economical entry to the Pixel 8 series.
The Google Pixel 8a leak is the result of a collaborative effort between notorious leaker OnLeaks and tech site Smartprix, with the former managing to get hold of some 3D renders of the device. With a slightly smaller design than the Pixel 7a at 6.1 inches, the 8a maintains the new design philosophy of the 8 series, including curved corners, a hole-punch selfie camera, and a two-camera bar on the back of the device. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see this handset make our list of the best Google Pixel phones on launch.
Unfortunately, we know much less about the inner workings of the Pixel 8a, though we expect the smartphone to utilize the brand-new Tensor G3 chipset found in the more expensive Pixel 8 devices. The cameras are something of a mystery, though, and considering the Google Pixel event 2023’s emphasis on smartphone photography, it’s hard to say how many of the new and exciting features are set to make it to the Pixel 8’s cheaper alternative.
The mid-range Pixel 8a seems to be the closest Google is willing to come to offering a budget smartphone, with the company reportedly telling Australian news outlet Der Standard that a budget-range Pixel device isn’t something the company is planning on. In saying that, we also don’t have much of an idea of how much Google is going to charge for the Pixel 8a, but we expect it to be at least $500 if not more.
