While many are looking forward to Apple’s next mobile hardware launch with the iPhone 16 coming later this year, it might be the iOS 18 update that arrives alongside it that really steps up the game. The next big update looks to rival the introduction of Galaxy AI and other Android AI features, as well as make messaging between iPhone and Android easier for everyone.
The latest is courtesy of Bloomberg tech correspondent Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter (via 9to5mac.com), with the reliable reporter suggesting that Apple is planning on iOS 18 being “one of the biggest iOS updates — if not the biggest — in the company’s history.” We’re still not sure exactly what the update might consist of, but Gurman suggests that the advances are thanks to the implementation of new generative AI technology, making Siri more intelligent and capable while also improving the iMessage, Keynote, Pages, and Apple Music user experience.
Another anticipated feature of the iOS 18 update is the introduction of RCS messaging to iPhone. Apple confirmed the introduction of the feature in 2023, making it easier and more secure to communicate via message between iPhone and Android devices, with the ability to see read receipts and typing indicators across both platforms. It’s possible that RCS integration could happen before the release of the iPhone 16 and iOS 18, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Apple wait to announce it alongside the big iOS update during the anticipated WWCD reveal in June. Either way, we’ll be keeping an eye out for any updates.
There’s still a way to go until we see the iOS 18 update, though, with Apple currently concentrating on the impending release of iOS 17.4 in early March. Still, the arrival of iOS 17.4 is pretty exciting in itself, with this next update promising some fresh emojis, improvements to the Stolen Device Protection feature, and the introduction of transcripts for Apple Podcasts.
