It’s said that dogs are man’s best friend, and diamonds are a girl’s best friend. But regardless of gender, and whether you like puppies or shiny rocks more, everyone knows that the critters you gather in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are a trainer’s true best friend. We all have that one (or more than one) Pokémon we’ve loved since day one, so imagine if you could take your favourite little friend everywhere with you?
No, we’re not talking about Pokémon Go – because now, you can have your BDSP Pokémon follow you as you go on adventures. And best of all, there are more benefits to having your Pokémon in tow (beyond them being adorable little hiking companions, of course). Not only will your chosen Pokémon engage in special interactions with you from time to time, but they can also gather items on your travels. In this guide, we’ll show you how to make BDSP Pokémon follow you, what they can pick up, and much more.

How to make your BDSP Pokémon follow you
Before you can get your BDSP Pokémon to follow you, you need to visit Amity Square in Hearthome City. To get here, you first need to defeat Gardenia (the second gym leader), and rescue the bicycle shop owner from Team Galactic to get your bike.
After you exit the park for the first time, an attendant will tell you that your Pokémon wants to walk with you, even when you’re outside of Amity Square. You can then choose a Pokémon to follow you, by completing the steps below.
- Open the menu by pressing X
- Select ‘Pokémon’
- Choose the Pokémon you want, then select ‘walk together’ from the dropdown menu
- The chosen Pokémon will then have a star by their banner
When a Pokémon is following you, you can interact with them by looking at them and pressing the A button. This will show you their mood, which can be affected by things like the weather, environment, time, and more. They’ll also occasionally show unique reactions, such as jumping for joy, as you walk together.
You can stop your Pokémon from following you at any point by going back to the Pokémon menu, and clicking the Pokéball next to the roaming critter.
While you’re out walking, your Pokémon can also pick up berries, which you can obtain by interacting with them. The berries they pick up depend on their nature, so switching them out will get you different rewards. Your Pokémon doesn’t need to have the pickup ability to gather berries.
