Garena Free Fire surpasses one billion downloads on Google Play

An event to celebrate the milestone is being held next month

Garena Free Fire continues to prove popular as it hits one billion downloads on Google Play, allegedly – according to Garena’s LinkedIn page – becoming the first mobile battle royale to do so. The game joins an elite group regardless, given not many iOS and Android titles boast such a figure.

For those of you who aren’t aware, Free Fire is a battle royale game for mobile devices, with it first coming onto the scene in September 2017. Since then, it’s gone from strength to strength, proving to be a market leader. Over the years, Free Fire has not only proven popular for the average player, but it’s also taken the esports world by storm, becoming the inaugural esports mobile game of the year winner.

Free Fire offers more than simple 50-person free-for-all combat. It frequently hosts crossover events with a range of brands, and franchises, including Formula 1 racing team McLaren, and man-eating anime, Attack on Titan. Of course, it’s not just events that the game offers, as it also features an Elite Pass, which changes every month, and gives a range of rewards while introducing new characters. At the moment, you can test your metal in the Wild West, while previous Elite Passes took inspiration from fairy tales – namely Cinderella.

To celebrate the milestone, Garena is hosting a celebration event in August, in conjunction with Free Fire’s fourth anniversary. Unfortunately, details on what this entails are scarce for now.
