How to evolve Basculin

At the time of writing, you can only evolve Basculin in Pokémon Legends: Arceus. The white-striped Basculin you find in Hisui is local only to that region and that time, with all other appearances either the blue or red-striped variety. So, make sure you’re trying to evolve Basculin in the correct game first.

Fortunately, Basculin is pretty easy to find in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, with many popping up in lakes and rivers throughout the game. Our go-to location is Coronet Highland’s Fabled Springs, but the river fish becomes even more available when mass outbreaks occur later in the game, with Basculin often appearing as one of the swarming species.

Once you have your Basculin, you need to teach it a move with recoil damage. We’ve included some options below, as well as the level Basculin learns them.

  • Take Down – level 36
  • Double Edge – level 52
  • Head Smash – level 56

Now you need to take your Basculin into a battle and deal 294 points of recoil damage to the little fish while surviving. For this one, we recommend bringing a bunch of potions along to heal up whenever necessary. Fortunately, you can spread the 294 points of recoil damage across multiple battles, so the easiest method is to head back to the game’s first area, Obsidian Fieldlands, where you can take down some easy pickings. Just keep attacking, taking recoil damage, healing, and repeating until you see that beautiful evolution animation.
