If you’ve started to encounter the vibrant and often mysterious characters of the Xianzhou Luofu on your trailblazing journey, you might be wondering how to accurately pronounce their names. Luckily for you, YouTuber and streamer Ying has made a Honkai Star Rail Xianzhou pronunciation guide.

Ying is an American-born Chinese content creator who makes videos about a range of gacha games including Genshin Impact and Honkai Star Rail, as well as cosplaying the characters. Two years ago, her YouTube video covering Liyue character pronunciations went semi-viral in the Genshin community and is a brilliant guide for the many of us who are unfamiliar with Mandarin pronunciation and tones.

As Hoyoverse’s games continue to take inspiration from real-world locations and cultures, more and more players want to educate themselves on the correct way to pronounce character names and locations, and learn more about the cultural source material. For example, when Hoyoverse released Genshin Impact’s newest region, Twitter user @paintedaugust put together a Sumeru pronunciation thread to educate fans from the perspective of an Arabic speaker.

In Ying’s video she also explores some of the literary meanings behind the character names. For example, Tingyun’s name, which is a reference to a poem, sounds like the name of an adeptus, as it roughly translates to ‘cloud stopper’. Qingque means ‘blue bird’ and Dan Heng’s name is a combination of both catalysing change and constant perseverance. What could that mean for his lore, we wonder?
