What is Pokémon Go’s king’s rock?

The king’s rock is an evolution item introduced in the gen 2 Pokémon games, Gold and Silver, and it’s a pretty important one, too. You see, a couple of gen 1 Pokémon got evolutions in Johto, and in order to evolve into them, you need a king’s rock.

How do I get a Pokémon Go king’s rock?

You can get a king’s rock by opening gifts and spinning pokéstops or gyms. Admittedly, doing the latter might not yield great results due to how rare the drop is, however, if you spin stops for seven straight days, you’re guaranteed an evolution item. You may also be able to get one upon completion of special research tasks and reaching a research breakthrough.

Pokémon Go king’s rock evolutions

There are two Pokémon that need this item to evolve: Slowpoke and Poliwhirl. In gen two, Slowpoke can evolve into the powerful psychic Pokémon known as Slowking (a ‘mon with a prominent role in the Pokémon 2000 movie), while we also get a second Poliwhirl evolution in the form of Politoed, who just so happens to be among the best frog Pokémon in the entire series.

To evolve Slowpoke, you need:

  • 50 Slowpoke candy
  • King’s rock

To evolve Polwhirl into Politoed, you need:

  • 100 Poliwag candy
  • King’s rock
