Pokémon Go Ditto - how to encounter and catch

Everything you need to know about finding the elusive pink blob in our Pokémon Go Ditto guide

October 9, 2020: We’ve tidied up our Pokémon Go Ditto guide!

In Pokémon Go, Ditto is one of the more challenging Pokémon to encounter due to its transformative nature. When shown on the map, it looks like any other common monster, which often leads the average player to ignore it. Ditto uses its move Transform to become any Pokémon it chooses; during the transformation, it takes on the appearance, attributes, and moveset of the target Pokémon.

Ditto was unavailable at the July 2016 launch of Pokémon Go. It finally made its debut in November of the same year and has since been cycling through a roster of common Pokémon it can transform into, which generally changes each month. Ditto is also required to complete the ‘A Mythical Discovery’ field research. Many players are eager to complete this research to get a chance at catching the mythical Pokémon, Mew.

Find all the Pokemon Go Ditto hints, tips, and tricks you need below, then check out our Pokémon Go updates, Pokémon Go raids, and Pokémon Go news guides to get your knowledge up to date on all things Pokémon Go!

EVERYTHING IN OUR POKEMON GO DITTO GUIDE:

TIPS, TRICKS AND HINTS

You will know you have caught the right Pokémon when an ‘Oh?’ appears above your Pokéball rather than the standard ‘Gotcha’. If this happens, Ditto will drop its disguise and show you its true form. Ditto is affected by incense and lures so be sure to pop one, or both, on before you start the hunt. If you are searching for a Ditto with a friend, it will always spawn from the same Pokémon, so be sure to let each other know when you find one! Lastly, you cannot hatch Ditto from an egg; it must be caught in the wild.

A MYTHICAL DISCOVERY FIELD RESEARCH

Part five of A Mythical Discovery field research requires the following tasks be completed:

  • Catch a Ditto
  • Catch 10 ghost-type Pokémon
  • Make 20 great throws

On completion of part five, you receive a Premium Raid Pass, a Lucky Egg, and 15 Revives. The main incentive for completing A Mythical Discovery is the opportunity to catch the mythical Pokémon, Mew. Check out our Pokémon Go Mew guide for full details.

DITTO IN BATTLE

Ditto only has one moveset: Transform and Struggle. Transform is used to change Ditto into the target Pokémon, including when you use Ditto to defend a gym. When it transforms, Ditto takes on the appearance, attributes, and moveset of the target Pokémon, though there are reports its CP will depend on your current level.
